The Duke Case's Cruel Truth: Hateful Stereotypes of Black Women Resurface (Major Barf alert)
The Washington Post ^ | May 24, 2006 | Lynne Duke

Posted on 05/24/2006 1:14:22 PM PDT by RecallMoran

She was black, they were white, and race and sex were in the air.

But whatever actually happened that March 13 night at Duke University -- both the reported rape and its surrounding details are hotly disputed -- it appears at least that the disturbing historic script of the sexual abuse of black women was playing out inside that lacrosse party.

Two black women performed an exotic dance. The white men in their audience shouted racial epithets, one of the women has said. Things got rough. Someone in the crowd held a broomstick aloft and shouted "I'm gonna shove this up you," the other woman told police when she reported being raped. As the women fled the house, a neighbor reportedly heard one of the men shout: "Hey bitch, thank your grandpa for my nice cotton shirt."

The mainstream media have largely tiptoed around the brutal truth that has been discussed among black women in private conversations, in the blogosphere and on college campuses. It is that the Duke case is in some ways reminiscent of a black woman's vulnerability to a white man during the days of slavery, reconstruction and Jim Crow, when sex was used as a tool of racial domination.

It was the kind of predatory behavior that found its way into modern culture in the old Rolling Stones song, "Brown Sugar." And the stereotype of black women as highly sexed, like the lascivious Jezebel from slavery days. "I think there's a tendency to downgrade black women and to discount the fact that, no matter what they are there to do, they are not just animals to be used," says Dorothy Height, 94, president emeritus of the National Council of Negro Women.

"Whatever she did, she was not there as a prostitute," Height says in her defense.

No kidding. The way those guys treated them, you'd think they were strippers or something.

Forgive me if I don't believe that number. I mean that's really reaching.

Well, if they really said some of things I have read to those women, I think it is a big deal. And I do care. I don't think anyone should be spoken to in that manner.

But, I am willing to let the case move forward and see what happens. No matter what happens, I hope all involved learned a valuable lesson and make changes in their lives.

The Duke report says the victim at first alleged that 20 lacrosse players had raped her, but then changed her count to three. Later, the Durham city manager challenged that account, saying it was based on a Duke police officer overhearing a snippet of a Durham city police officer's phone conversation about the case. Nonetheless, the conclusion that the victim wasn't credible made its way through the university's chain of command.

The race hustlers and feminazis dismiss the fact that the Duke officer heard the Durham officer say Crystal had changed her story about how many men raped her, based on the fact that the Duke merely "overheard" it.

But I have seen no one actually DENY that the Durham officer said what the Duke officer overheard. And now there is in defense hands the full 3-4 page initial police report which the defense has shown reporters in which indeed, the Durham police officers WERE IN FACT told different versions by Crystal, including that she had not been raped at all.

The MSM just sinks lower and lower...

There you go trying to inject facts into this racism discussion. I think we can look at how the black community portrays its women along with the explosion of the "baby momma" culture and figure out where that "stereotype" of them being over-sexed comes from. It's certainly not coming from whites. Absolutely correct. This is where the truth of the matter lies (no pun intended :P ) -- It's a shame blacks are too blind to see that they are responsible for the portrayl of their women including the cat calling in this incident.

Is it a big enough deal to suspend them from school and arrest them for felonies? Is it a big enough deal to incite riots in Durham?

Give me a break.

WOW! Well, I think your hatred may run deeper than I care to go. Good day.

Ah, the hate card. People like Nifong and the two whores are deserving of every bit of contempt and scorn they are getting. And there's more to come.

Well, forgive me, but I missed the riots in Durham. No, nothing justifies that. I will look for some stories on the riot so I can read up on it. I am against burning cars, trashing things, etc...

If only they had thought of the consequences that may follow if they hire strippers, etc....those consequences may seem harsh but apparently that is the rule of the school.

I once visited a g/f's family in Edinburg, TX. It was a totally different part of the south than what I was used to. I'd forgotten about the Brown Hornet. Hey, hey, hey!

1st--I think CGM has had her revenge for any name calling. (Which, BTW, isn't illegal) and
2nd--Perhaps the verbal assault was due to comments like "limp dicked white boys"
It appears to me that insults were TRADED. I'm sure as a prostitute that CGM has heard worse even if it was just in rap music. I really doubt she was shocked, stunned, horrified by any verbal slings.
Should people yell nasty things at one another? No but does it upset me terribly? Yawn.

I'll try to remember the stats correctly

From the 1920s to about the 1950s there were about 2,000 lynchings (nationwide - not all in the south by the way). Lynchings today are mostly unheard of.

In the 1990s there were about 10,000 deaths from gang related violence in LA alone. Black-on-black gang violence is routine including in Durham.

In 2006, who's the greatest threat to a black man? The answer is another black man.

(These stats are from Freakonomics which has the proper citations to authoritative sources). People who continue to obsess about the crimes of 50-70 years ago are trying to avoid addressing the real problems of today.

....that being said, being naked and drunk with a group of white boys is not a good mix for any female...prostitue, stripper or coed.

One of the things I've been curious about in this situation is this: How did this stripper get her gigs? Did she work for an agency of some kind? If she did, wouldn't it seem that it was pretty irresponsible to send a black stripper to a rich white frat boy party, knowing the potential for trouble that could pose?

It (the OJ Jury) was an all INNER CITY jury with public employees in the mix.

If judges would stop letting defense lawyers drag out high-profile trials maybe more of us private sector people could afford to serve on a jury instead of looking for relief. Who can afford to sit still for the shennanigans that goes on when you essentially aren't getting paid.

If only they had thought of the consequences that may follow...

I guess they shoulda thunk they would be set up/hustled by a couple strippers and/or prostitutes, a DA would use this to his political advantage, and Jesse Jackson, the NBP, et al, would race bait. :O/
