I'll try to remember the stats correctly

From the 1920s to about the 1950s there were about 2,000 lynchings (nationwide - not all in the south by the way). Lynchings today are mostly unheard of.

In the 1990s there were about 10,000 deaths from gang related violence in LA alone. Black-on-black gang violence is routine including in Durham.

In 2006, who's the greatest threat to a black man? The answer is another black man.

(These stats are from Freakonomics which has the proper citations to authoritative sources). People who continue to obsess about the crimes of 50-70 years ago are trying to avoid addressing the real problems of today.
