Tom Hanks and other stars of "The Da Vinci Code" left London for the much-anticipated movie's premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in France, aboard a special Eurostar train.
The train, repainted with the face of the Mona Lisa, was hoping to enter the record books by making the longest international non-stop rail journey on the 1,421-kilometre (883-mile) route.
Dan Brown, who wrote the best-selling novel "The Da Vinci Code", joined the film version's director Ron Howard and actors Hanks, Ian McKellen, Jean Reno, Alfred Molina and Paul Bettany on the journey to the southern French coast.
The film was to open the 59th Cannes Film Festival on Wednesday night. The festival runs until May 28.
Religious critics claim that "The Da Vinci Code"'s theme -- that Jesus Christ had children with Mary Magdalene and their bloodline continues -- is blasphemous.
Brown has taken liberties with the whole basis of Christianity, and is being promoted as a film that will show you 'everything your father taught you about Christianity is wrong'. Brown has not clarified where his alleged facts stops and his fiction begins. If Brown is willing to admit there is nothing to the theory that Christ and Mary had a child and other such blasphemous claims, I might give him a pass. But the promotion of the book/movie indicate otherwise.
I have posted this many times before - look at the artwork. For example: If you did not know that the convention in Leonardo's time was to depict St. John as looking rather feminine, you would think that "The Last Supper" showed a woman sitting next to Jesus.
Again: the DESCRIPTION is accurate, the INTERPRETATION is fiction.
It doesn't matter either way.
Everyone I know acknowledges that Harry Potter is fiction. There are actual nutjobs out there who think the DaVinci Code conspiracy theory is real.
Remember a couple of months ago when the Muslims were flipping out over a cartoon depiction of Mohammed? Well now it's our turn. But don't let it get you so riled up.
It's a fictional story. It doesn't change the truth, and it shouldn't shake up your faith. The truth always stands up on it's own.
Lots of historical fiction takes a document or an event and "fills in" the gaps. That doesn't make it a historical account, it's just fiction.
Opus Dei isn't a secret society though. There are Opus Dei colleges in several locations. They just opened a new one in NYC, as I recall.
The idea that Christ married and had children is preposterous and is not supported by scripture.
Yep. Sad thing is, some have bought into it being 'historical but suppressed fact'.
I read the book. I encouraged my teenage daughter to read the book. Then we had a discussion. I pointed her to the opposing views that I had found on the internet.
I did this not as a religious lesson, but as a lesson in determining for oneself what was the truth. The masses are being driven by those who wish to create history in their own view, rather than by the view of objectivity.
In the end, she agrees with me: His other books are better, this one was OK. The movie might be OK, but the story is just a story. I am sure the scenery of the movie will drive a "Kramer tour" fade in Europe this summer and next.
That comparison is so stupid, since you know the Christians aren't going to riot over the Da Vinci Code. On the contrary, they're using completely legal means to get their viewpoint out.
And what about the film promotions saying, 'everything your father taught you about Christianity is wrong'? Brown has not done enough to clarify where his facts stop and where his fiction begins. Brown has resurrected the lies of Holy Blood, Holy Grail. That book has been totally debunked, but Brown is relying on those forged documents and debunked conspiracy theory and presenting them seemingly as factual.
Hope you have your asbestos underwear on, you are going to need it!
I happen to agree with your point - It does not matter and is totally irrelevant to Christianity's core beliefs. However, lots of people (including FReepers) seem to be getting their knickers in a real knot about this topic.
Not if Jesus was from France. Maybe Mary and Joseph travelled to Bethlehem from Paris.

The fact is - that many will believe the fiction or it will put doubt in their heart.
We live in an ignorant society. Why would Christians choose to participate in something that will work against what the Lord wants?
Another thing - the Jews never accepted that Jesus was the Savior. Therefore, they are not dishonoring their Savior as they do not accept He is the Savior. But I do and it is just another slam against my Savior.
Again, why in the world would I want to pay money to see it? If I go to church to worship Jesus - why would I go to a movie that dishonors Him?
And those who aren't comfortable with the DaVinci Code, like yourself, wouldn't read it or see it. Does that mean everybody must conform to YOUR opinion?
Anybody else listen to The Jesus Christ Show last Sunday?
It was amazing the way Jesus blew the DaVinci Code to smithereens !!!

Film promotions? You mean the ads that state the premise of the story, which is based on a novel?
Did you believe, "27,000 nuclear warheads. One is missing."?
Rioting wasn't the point, the point was that Muslims didn't care for the inaccurate depiction of Mohammed, and Christians don't care for an inaccurate depiction of Jesus.
