Michael Medved discussing troops on the border first hour. He's not happy with it. Thinks it's a PR stunt.
When I say wall I mean whatever kind of barrier(s) it will take to get the job done.

I think the word "wall" is the problem. We'd actually build a set of two fences with a ditch in the front. I think if people saw this type of "wall" then they'd be for it.
Many, many people do pay taxes who may not have the correct paperwork. NO hellfire missiles, but with these pictures, you have a mechanism of identification so that if they are caught, they cannot legally come back once they are deported.
Wall is not a problem word for me, but I see your point--words matter and the touchy feely crowd (or the claustrophopbic sensitive) need words that make them feel nice. Security fence with ports of entry?
True. it's one of, if not the, weakest aspects of his generally great show. How can he say that Ted Kennedy doesn't want an Amnesty? Is he that naive? Does he think Senator Kennedy will, once this bill is signed, say, "Well, that's that. I think I've had my fill of weakening national sovereignty for the rest of my life. Barkeep, another round of Sam Adams for me!"
I'm not sure about that. I don't totally agree with him on immigration but he's definitely not a liberal on the issue.
He supports this bill containing these loopholes, tell me that is NOT a liberal bill.
Here is a condensed list of the 10 loopholes Senator Sessions was able to find in his overnight reading of the bill:
Loophole No. 1: Absconders and some individuals with felonies or 3 misdemeanors are not barred from getting amnesty.
Loophole No. 2: Aliens specifically barred from receiving immigration benefits for life because they filed a frivolous asylum application will also be able to receive amnesty.
Loophole No. 3: All aliens who are subject to a final order of removal--or who are subject to the reinstatement of a final order of removal because they illegally reentered after being ordered removed from the United States are also eligible for amnesty.
Loophole No. 4: Aliens who illegally entered the country multiple times are also eligible for amnesty.
Loophole No. 5: This bill allows aliens who have persecuted anyone on account of race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group or political opinion get amnesty. It fails to make persecutors ineligible for amnesty.
Loophole No. 6: There is no continuous presence or continuous work requirement for amnesty. To be eligible to adjust from illegal to legal statutes under the bill, the alien must simply have been ``physically present in the United States on April 5, 2001,'' and have been ``employed continuously in the United States'' for 3 of the 5 years ``since that date.''
Loophole No. 7: The bill tells the Department of Homeland Security to accept ``just and reasonable inferences'' from day labor centers as evidence of an alien meeting the bill's work requirements.
The bill then states:
..... it is the intent of Congress that the [work] requirement ..... be interpreted and implemented in a manner that recognizes and takes into account the difficulties encountered by aliens in obtaining evidence of employment due to the undocumented status of the alien.
Loophole 8: The bill benefits only those who broke the law, not those who followed it and got work visas to come to the United States.
Loophole 9: The essential worker permanent immigration program for nonagriculture low-skilled workers leaves no illegal alien out. It is not limited to people outside the United States who want to come here to work in the future but includes illegal aliens currently present in the United States who do not qualify for the amnesty program in title VI, including aliens here for less than 2 years. Under the bill language, you can qualify for this new program to work as a low-skilled permanent immigrant even if you are unlawfully present in the United States.
Loophole No. 10: The annual numerical cap on this program is a completely artificial cap. If the 400,000 cap per year is reached, what happens then? The cap immediately adjusts itself to make more room under the cap.
His solution other than building the wall is amnesty... I wish he would take note of how unfair the McCain-Kennedy bill is to legal immigrants and how unfair the way our immigration system is balanced since Senator Kennedy screwed them up in the mid sixties. If someone has skills, it's tough for that person to get in and stay, because people with skills vote. But if you're an unskilled illegal immigrant--- come on in!

Frankly, I think his arrogance is what keeps him from getting informed. He acts as though the Kennedy-McCain immigration bill proposed is the same as the Kyl-Cornyn bill, and as though Tamar Jacoby is an immigration moderate.
Now he's giving credit to McCain for grandstanding on Darfur without giving any specific proposals. He didn't give it to Oprah for blathering about Darfur yesterday, why McCain today?

I'll read the loopholes in a minute--thanks for posting that. I know there's got to be loopholes and I'm not even that well read. One problem I've stated in the past, and a problem I don't see Michael Medved addressing (a guy just brought this up last hour to him) how do we know Juan Jose Garcia is not really Juan Jose Menedez and wanted for murder in Mexico. Also how will we be able to do an effective background check even if he does use his correct name. First of all there's lots of Juan Jose Garcias out there. Secondly, is there that much of a paper trail on people in Mexico. You do an Equifax search on me and you'll pull up information. Does Mexico have that kind of ability to track people? How are we going to be able access information for an extensive background check? Isn't it going to be rather expensive if it's done correctly for 10 million+ people? These are just questions that come into my mind. I want whatever we do to be the most effective and not just window dressing.
Anyway, I know Medved wants the best for this country. I think he wants what will work. And in his mind, he thinks
the best way to get a handle on the situation is to do some sort of guest worker program. I'm sure he thinks there are things in the bill that need to be hashed out.
Has he had Tamar Jacoby on? She is one annoying broad--very arrogant.
I haven't really been paying attention. What was he playing from McCain? What did Okra say about Darfur yesterday? He did do a show about her on Friday about the USA Today article saying she's America's spiritual leader. Anyway, I hope it doesn't come down to a choice between McCain and Hillary. I'll have to vote for McCain.

I have to say that even though I don't particularly like McCain, I am reading his book, Character is Destiny, with my oldest son and it's very good thus far. We've gotten through the first two chapters--Tomas More, Gandhi.
