A neighbor heard Raymond Tomco shouting yesterday but figured he was just yelling at his dogs. Then Tomco's daughter came home, went up the driveway past the pink roses nearby and opened her door to three bloody pit bulls. She walked inside. Her screams were unmistakable.

Christina Tomco had found the body of her 78-year-old father covered in his own blood in the hallway of his Lusby home, according to the Calvert County Sheriff's Office. Officers said the retired builder had "countless" bite marks on his arms and hands. Authorities strongly suspect he was killed by the animals

I'd say the pits killed him, unless he died of natural causes and the dogs wanted lunch.

Gee, ya think? I can see Taranto's headline now: What would America do without authorities?

I'm beginning to think pit bulls should have their own category on FreeRepublic.

Naw. It was the cat and the Pomeranian. Ask the Pit Bulls' attorney, he'll tell you.

Some pit bulls are great dogs - others are killers.

And having more than one dog of any breed at the same time can result in pack-like behavior. One of the dogs may have initiated the attack and the others joined it.

Based on the description of the victim he sounds like a person who considered himself a "tough guy" and may have not really trained the dogs properly. Using an aggressive tough guy approach, which makes you the "top dog" in the pack, may, perhaps, have resulted in one of the dogs sizing him up and deciding the guy was too old to be "top dog" anymore.

"Authorities strongly suspect he was killed by the animals"

You can't put anything over on the Po-lice.

"Paul Chew, a construction worker who lives across the street..."

Ironic, isn't it?

Around White Sands, some said Tomco's dogs were known to cause problems.

It seems that's the case in many of these attacks. Until the owners of these pets and authorities start taking action after the first incident, more people are going to be maimed and killed, by all breeds.

Okay, this is the first time I posted a pic. It's way too big. Any advice on how to downsize?

Only if you keep that vicious beast back. ;-)

In your HTML code < img src = "http=whatever.jpg" > you include < height=200 width=300 > or some even fraction of what it actually is. You can stretch it if you get the proportions wrong, though.

Thanks so much. That's our baby. The only one who thinks he's vicious is Rizzo the cat when Buster is chasing him.

Oh, my, my, my. What a sweetheart! Makes me lonesome for our Bentley James of years gone by. "Ben" didn't have a mean bone in his body. He was terrific with my daughter and her friends. And he was always the guest of honor at her slumber parties.

Funny, funny dog. Especially around the pool. Haven't the vaguest idea why he enjoyed swimming so much but he did. (Not to worry, he was always supervised. Though I'm not sure he needed to be.)

Can't say that he was the smartest dog we ever owned but he certainly was a delight. His entire life was run by our then Siamese cat, Edgar. What a couple! Slept next to each other and played themselves silly. Miss them both a lot. Who wouldn't?
