Some pit bulls are great dogs - others are killers.
And having more than one dog of any breed at the same time can result in pack-like behavior. One of the dogs may have initiated the attack and the others joined it.
Based on the description of the victim he sounds like a person who considered himself a "tough guy" and may have not really trained the dogs properly. Using an aggressive tough guy approach, which makes you the "top dog" in the pack, may, perhaps, have resulted in one of the dogs sizing him up and deciding the guy was too old to be "top dog" anymore.
