First DNA link possible in lacrosse case

DURHAM -- Tissue found under the fingernail of an exotic dancer who claimed she was raped at a Duke University lacrosse party may match a player who was there, several well-placed sources said Wednesday.

Analyzing the tissue, scientists concluded it came from the same genetic pool and was "consistent" with the bodily makeup of one of 46 lacrosse players who gave DNA samples for testing, the sources said.

At the same time, scientists ruled out a possible match with any of the other 45 students, according to the sources.

If accurate, the fingernail tissue match would offer the first DNA evidence potentially linking the dancer and an alleged attacker.

But because a complete DNA pattern was not obtained from the tissue, it was not possible to match it with the nearly 100 percent certainty that DNA results usually offer, the sources added.

The dancer told police she clawed at three attackers as they raped and sodomized her for 30 minutes during the March 13-14 lacrosse house party at 610 N. Buchanan Blvd.

Remember we were wondering about testing for a date-rape drug?

An exotic dancer who says she was gang-raped and beaten at a Duke lacrosse team party where she was hired to perform was given a test at a hospital to determine if she had a date-rape drug in her system, WRAL has learned.

Oh My GOd.

Susana Meadows (Newsweek) says on Greta Fox that picking up the Cahbie is pretty standard, and she'd be really surprised if this was intimidation... BECAUSE HE"S NOT AN IMPORTANT WITNESS.

Idiot.. If Seligmann's case is thrown out due to the ID, the other cases go down the drain.

BIAS BIAS BIAS>.. Susana Meadows has bought Nifong's Timeline all along ... (even when it moves).

Does it raise a red flag that Evans doesn't have the same attorney as his fellow captains?

How many weeks now has the DA (or is the Media) been bringing up the "date-rape" stuff? "Coming to a town near you...".

I don't know. You know, what's really strange is that these people were cleared, on what basis?

It's hard for me to believe they had an alibi or evidence stronger than Seligmann's..

I suspect their clearing is more a testament to his relationship with Sutton than to evidence.

How many players is Cheshire representing?

You're right. I think the DPD has gone into damage control mode and is leaking information to counter the damage done by the Duke Police report. The article does go on to say the results haven't been released to the public (though I'm sure they will eventually).

I was listening to Nancy Grace on XM when I went to pick up son. It sounded like the female FBI profiler bitch slapped (scuse me) Nancy and the rest of the rape Nazi's saying Nifong better have more than an Ace up his sleeve 'cause he's got nothing else.

It was right before the break, music was playing, but bless her heart, she kept on talking.

Does it include blood-alcohol concentration?

From about.com (no link ... too many pop ups):

What exactly are date rape drugs? Technically speaking, any substance that renders you incapable of saying no or asserting yourself and your needs can be used to commit rape. This can include things like alcohol, marijuana or other street drugs, designer or club drugs like ecstasy, over-the-counter sleeping pills and antihistamines, even cold medications. However, the term "date rape drug" usually applies to the drugs Rohypnol, Gamma Hydroxy Butyrate (GHB) and Ketamine Hydrochloride.

Hah! Great summary of all the news articles and Talking Head comments for the next two weeks.

Saves me the bother of paying any attention to them.

I've only seen Cheshire described as "defending one of the players" in media reports. However, he was outspoken advocate for the players prior to the charges against Finnerty and Silegmann. In that article I posted, Sutton says the defense lawyers were stunned by the two arrests, leading me to believe they suspected someone else was going to be arrested.

Evans?

"B-sharp, aren't you a biologist? Please, I need your expertise here. Is it possible for a fresh biological sample large enough to be considered "tissue" not to have the complete DNA within?"

I certainly appreciate the confidence in my knowledge but I'm not a biologist, just someone who spends time researching as fully as possible most responses.

Much of my knowledge is from the years I spent on TalkOrigins.

As far as your post is concerned, without doing any additional research I would agree with you, each skin/fat/muscle cell contains a full set of DNA. If the sample contained only partial cells, which is possible, some DNA may be missing from each cell but a full set should be reconstructible. If however they found only erythrocytes (red blood cells) no DNA would be found. This isn't likely though.

I think the point that was made is that tissue under the fingernail goes to the interaction of the two and their personal intent, therefore in this instance, the 'who' may not be as important as the 'why'. (I know little about this particular case so I'm just throwing out ideas).

You know this case is the subject of fantasies of defense attorneys around the country.

Oh yeah. She did. She brought reality to the show.

Nancy lied and lied and misled and the misled more ..

The Crimal Profiler, Pat ?, she said it doesn't look like any rape seen to her. She started to point and why and a Commercial break came up really quick. Nancy ushered her out quick as she could. A male profiler couldn't have said that without Nancy attacking him as a cross of Hitler and Jeffery Dalhmer.
