The report said the ruins, near the present-day city of Ji'an, are believed to date to China's Han Dynasty in 202 B.C.-220 A.D. But Korea's Koguryo kingdom ruled the area at that time, and Xinhua said the city included tombs of Koguryo design. Another burial area found some 12 miles away on the reservoir floor has 2,360 tombs also believed to date from Koguryo, Xinhua said. The Koguryo kings reigned from 37 B.C. to A.D 668 over the Korean Peninsula and northeastern China. The era is regarded as one of the high points of Korean cultural and political power... The ruined city's wall is five feet high and 13 feet thick and encloses an area 600 feet by 700 feet, Xinhua said. It is surrounded by a moat.

China publishes research results on Koguryo Kingdom ruinsBefore this, the only archaeological report about the Koguryo Kingdom ruins in the world was published in Japan in the 1930s, according to Jin Xudong, head of the Jilin Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology. The four academic papers, with pictures and verified data, are compiled by Chinese archaeological workers who had participated in excavating the Koguryo Kingdom ruins, most of which are scattered in Ji'an City of northeast China's Jilin Province and Huanren County of the neighboring Liaoning Province. The Koguryo Kingdom ruins was inscribed into the World Heritage List on Thursday... Established in 37 BC and destroyed in 668 AD, the Koguryo Kingdom lasted for 705 years and played a big role in the development of Northeast Asia.

No bigger than many back yards. Still most back yards don't have a 13 foot wall and thousands of tombs.
Care to speculate on their origins?
Central Asia.
Yup. (me too)
My thinking is, the pulse of warming-cooling results in a few generations of egress from Central Asia, following a very nice population spike just ahead of the cooling.

BEIJING - The ruins of a 2,000-year-old walled city have been found in a reservoir on China's northeastern border with North Korea, China's official news agency reported Wednesday.
The mud-covered ruins were exposed when the water level in the Yunfeng Reservoir was lowered for repairs, Xinhua News Agency said, citing government officials. The reservoir is on a tributary of the Yalu River, which forms the border of the two countries.
The report said the ruins, near the present-day city of Ji'an, are believed to date to China's Han Dynasty in 202 B.C.-220 A.D. But Korea's Koguryo kingdom ruled the area at that time, and Xinhua said the city included tombs of Koguryo design.

China angered Koreans in 2004 when it issued a document describing Koguryo as part of Chinese history. Beijing and Seoul agreed to settle the dispute through academic discussions.
The ruined city's wall is five feet high and 13 feet thick and encloses an area 600 feet by 700 feet, Xinhua said. It is surrounded by a moat.
The dam and reservoir were built in the 1950s, Xinhua said.
Zhang Fuyou, chairman of the Mount Changbai Cultural Society of Jilin Province, said further excavation would required to confirm when the city was built, Xinhua reported.
Koguryo was a large empire that stretched from present day China to Korea. Part of Manchuria was Korean land, but China took it from them. At the time, they did not care because land was not an issue for them. I would not be surprised if Korguyo had Caucasians, most likely Ainus, Polynesians, Hakkas, and Tocharians, living there, besides Mongoloids. Some people think Japanese language is from Korguyeo Kingdom. Once that Korguyeo kingdom fell, I would suspect many of them left for other parts of Asia, mainly Japan, to Europe, and even America and assimilated with some Indian tribes there.
some of talk here about Koguryo are complete B$.
Koguryo was refered for the first time as a self-dominant barbarian tribe in the Manchuria today under ruled of HAN empire (202BC-220AD).Koguryo had a obigation of give tribute to chinese emperor.
at that time, chinese Han empire set four provinces in south Manchuria and north Korea today, totally called "Yuelan FOUR provinces". Koguryo was derietly ruled by hKoguryo county,Yuelan Jun province"Bthat is the origin of Koguryo's name.
after the collapse of Han empire(220AD),the peace in east asia ended, and lots of barbarian tribes assaulted china, just as barbarian did on Rome empire in the west.chinese had to retreat to the south of Yangtse just as Eeat Rome empire did and the north china falled into the grasp of barbarian, just as West Rome empire did.
Koguryo was one of the barbarians rising up after collapse of Han empire, Koguryo took the chance to get the indenpendence and expanded gradually. By the 5 th century, Koguryo had conquered all "Yuelan FOUR provincesh set up by Chinese in Han empire and ruled south Manchuria and north Korea today. at that time Koguryo was most powerful kingdom manchria and korea.
But after the 6th century, the whole China was united under Tang empire. Tang empire was the actual revival of Han empire and was the most powerful and prosperous empire in the wolrd at that time. And Koguryo was crushed by Tang empire and its allies in Korea peninsula, the Kingdom of Xinluo .
After koguryo was conquered, its territory and people was carveed up by Tang empire and Kingdom of Xinluo . south Manchuria and half people belonged to Tang empire and north korea peninsula and half people was presented to the kingdom of Xinluo as the gift of the emperor. and the kingdom of Xinluo gradually developed to modern Korea.
