DURHAM -- A March 14 Duke Police Department report that downplayed gang-rape allegations against the school's lacrosse team stemmed from what a Duke officer overheard while listening to a Durham Police Department sergeant's cell phone conversation, City Manager Patrick Baker said Tuesday.

The Duke officer, Christopher Day, never actually spoke to the sergeant or conducted any follow-up inquiry before telling his superiors that the woman at the center of the case had changed her story several times, and that her allegations were unlikely to produce serious charges, Baker said.

That's quite a lying headline.

"Any assertion that the Durham Police Department didn't take this case seriously or indicated that it would blow over is completely contradicted by the facts and our actions," Baker said.

Yah.. right.. that's why they waited until 3/16 to issue and exercise the search warrant of 610...

Police found Ms. Mangum's makeup kit, cell phone and ID at the party house. Her PURSE, WALLET, and money have not been recovered.

You are correct... go here to see the inventory...

I looked up the model numbers of the Verizon phones and none appeared to branded by Sanyo as claimed in the initial police report.. but that could be meaningless...

If you look closely at the back porch photos you can see that the AV has two bags in her hand, one is open and you can see the junk inside... According to the descriptions of the other photos when she is lying on the ground, the contents and other stuff appear to be scattered around on the ground after she "falls".

We know that Kim was back there, Kim has never claimed to have been robbed that I know of... In fact she claims the guys "ripped themselves off" with the broom comment...

I personally think Kim made the first 911 call as a smoke screen to her ripping off her partner...

Yes, ma'am.

He's *just* a little upset.

I'm not familiar with Smith, but I was reading this comment from someone from the area, regarding the McDonald case, and also Duke.

"The Durham county district attorney - Mike Nifong, a truly evil man much in the tradition of Jim Blackburn, the man who unfairly put Jeffrey MacDonald into prison with the aid of his friend 'Judge' Frank Dupree - has been riding this case as he would a stump-broke mule. To further his bid for reelection. And breaking a few points of law on the way as well."

I bet these boys had some Penthouse fantasies about what these women would be like and ended up unpleasantly surprised at the reality.

Police didn't get a statement from the woman until the morning of March 16, Baker said.

How many hours after the "rape" is this?

I only know of him from the MacDonald case, but from what I've seen he's a very impressive guy.

I've always thought that if Wade Smith had been the lead attorney on that case (instead of Bernie Segal), MacDonald might have gotten off. But then, I always believed MacDonald was guilty as sin, so I'm glad he wasn't acquitted.

It would be interesting to find out if the defense has been following Kim around collecting all the $20 bills she's been trying to get rid of for the last 2 months... or else that shoebox under the bed is calling someone's name...

It would take me quite a while to shed 140 or so twenties... and a $2000 plus bank deposit might raise a few eyebrows...

How many hours after the "rape" is this?

The alleged rape is to have occurred between 11:30PM on March 13th and 1:00AM on March 14th..

48.

Remember when I posted the live statement from the Durham Police that was read on either WRAL or ABC11?

It was something like the reason they took so long getting their search warrant was because "the victim" (their words) wasn't able to make a complete (i.e., coherent) accusation until SUBSEQUENT INTERVIEWS.

Baker said at that public meeting that they were "working on the victim's timeline," meaning she didn't settle on her story until that morning!

If only he hadn't worked with John Edwards, I could really like him!

But he is quite a formidable guy; I might drive over to Durham to watch him wipe the floor with Nifong.

Wade Smith is STILL flogging that MacDonald case!

I was under the impression it was something like 30 hours...Now it's at least 48, assuming she made the statement in the wee hours of the 16th. My guess is it was later in the morning which means her statement was over 50 hours later!

Now where did I get the 30 hours from?

I do not know; the numbers have been flying around here though, so it's easy to get confused.

March 14 at 3 a.m. (that's what the Duke police report says)

Is there a time on the first search warrant on the 16th?

You are spot on Neverforget01... The more I read the city manager's statement, the more unbelievable it becomes...

It is so odd that you can't read a single article or statement in this case without completely parsing each word against 10 other contradictory items...

Police did not search the house where the party took place for two days after the party. Baker has said the delay occurred because it took 31 hours for police to get the accuser to give a statement of what happened at the party

I'd believe Laura Bush gives lapdances to the DNC before I'd believe Tucker Carlson raped anyone.

Wendy Murphy is a nutjob--or at least she's doing a good job impersonating one. This case seems to be bringing out the crazies in some people.
