Ferris Bueller's Day Off: 20th Anniversary Edition
Sydney Morning Herald ^ | 5/3/06 | Iain Mckay

Posted on 05/05/2006 12:16:08 PM PDT by qam1

Matthew Broderick stars in the '80s teen comedy about rebelling in style.

Every kid has known a Ferris Bueller, that kid with the zen-like state of mind who seems impossibly mature, infuriatingly confident, never less than charming and usually gets what he wants. And this being the infamous decade of greed, that means conspicuous consumption.

Our '80s Ferris is played with great style by a young Matthew Broderick who, tired of school drudgery, borrows a Ferrari and convinces some friends to accompany him to Chicago for the day.

Naturally all this is to be accomplished without anyone noticing, without any consequences and with maximum cool, a sleight of hand only a Ferris-like state of mind is capable of. Teen rebellion with style.

You said he liked that "Oh Yeah" song at the end of the movie? You can right-click the link below and download the whole song to your computer--and it's free :)

Didn't this guy get in some real heavyweight trouble? Not what Jennifer Grey did to him in the movie, but in real life.

Sixteen Candles is one of the best teen movies ever made.

As you might have guessed from Kimball's reply, it was a syndicated afternoon Disney cartoon, where Huey, Dewey and Louie were living with Scrooge (the backstory is that Donald was serving in the Navy) and getting involved in all sorts of wacky adventures.

I'd like to add "Uncle Buck" to that list.

John Candy's finest hour.

Me too! I've enjoyed reading all the posts on this thread--it feels like 1986 again! :)

Except in 1986, we would be having this conversation on Commodore 64s...presumably Commodore's connected by some sort of advanced string-and-tin-can network.

In '86 I got my first job, and spent all the disposable cash from my first couple of paychecks on a peripheral disk drive.

You know, the sad thing is, that's such a neat song, and such a great 80s icon, but every time I hear it I think of the limo scene with Margaret Whitton in The Secret of My Success, and I have to take a cold shower.

They should be shown the film immediately. It's an important part of their cultural heritage.

What a funny movie! I remember reading somewhere, years ago, that a sequel had been considered with Ferris working in a corporation.

but his actual picture looks more like Barry Bonds?

Remember, that picture was taken right after his cover was blown. The sketches are after months of re-islamizing himself. The Al Qaida manual actually tells these guys to shave their beards of during operations.

Oh crap, I got distracted and posted about the Moussaoui execution in a movie thread! Yeesh!

The comment I should have made here is that the sequall would probably have been hilarious, but I'm glad they didn't mess with greatness.

Apparently the idea of a sequel to 16 Candles called "32 Candles" was kicked around, with the cast coming back and playing themselves 16 years later, but it never went anywhere.
