Cat to Reunite With Owner After 10 Years
Wed May 3, 9:09 PM ET
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Sneakers the cat is being reunited with his owner, hundreds of miles away from where the feline disappeared in 1996.
The long-haired black cat was given to Sacramento's Animal Care Services last week, where an employee scanned him for a microchip, a routine procedure.
The number on the chip was used to track down Allison MacEwan of Seattle, who said she placed newspaper ads and went door-to-door with fliers in a futile search for her lost cat a decade ago.
Officials on Wednesday said they aren't sure how the cat wound up in Sacramento.
MacEwan's daughter was 4 years old when her cat disappeared, and officials said she is now looking forward to being reunited with her childhood pet.
You're a "closet" cat person?
And I still don't know how to save a video clip that is set up for viewing only. Graphics, no problem...
I think this is a wonderful story. Sounds to me as though his original owner is eager to have him back.
Strange that it took so long for someone to discover his microchip. Makes me wonder if his second owner ever took him to a vet. Or perhaps Sneakers did his own thing all those years....? Seems improbable but who knows. Either way Sneakers really ought to 'fess up. He's probably got one heck of a story.
Happy trails, Mr. Sneakers!
Ah, then I see why you posed that question in response to two animated graphics links, oh Master of Clarity.
so you don't know either, huh?
Ten is not old for a cat. Mine are 9, 11, 11, 14, and 21. I had another that was 27 when it got run over by a car.
well aren't you just a ray of sunshine.
If I had a dollar for every cat I've met named Smokey I could retire a wealthy woman.
"I really doubt the cat will be thrilled to see them...not that a cat ever gets thrilled."
Oh, we've seen our three get pretty jazzed. Honest. Youngest of the bunch is the most demonstrative, 'natch. Whenever dinner is announced, he roars into the kitchen, dances back and forth on all four paws, purrs like a snow blower and 'talks' a blue streak.
They're fed in order of seniority so Rhys sometimes gets a bit impatient while awaiting his turn. When he does, he makes silly trilling sounds and repeatedly flops over on his side for attention. Looks as though he's trying to impress upon me that he's "near death from starvation." Which is a blatant lie but he tends towards the dramatic.
I suspect his slogan may be, "If it works, work it."
I'll agree that most cats need to be encouraged to be demonstrative, but it's certainly not impossible to achieve. You need to believe me when I say we've got a three ring circus going on over here. Silly as it sounds, they even know it's a good thing when we applaud for them. That really makes them show off.
Of course our dog likes applause too. Clapping makes her run in circles as fast as she can go. It's hilarious.
Different species show their emotions in different ways. Regardless, I think it's all a lot of fun to watch.
My daughter has a calico who when they lived here would jump into the window sill and meow and then run to the door and ditto when she heard my daughter coming up the front walk. Even if the cat and I had just been playing "retrieve" games she still wanted to see her human (smartest cat I ever knew).
My wife's current cat does the same. Meows when she hears the car and is all over my wife when she come sin the driveway. But she doesn't retrieve.
My cat is just useless. If it's cold at night or if the woodstove goes out, she comes up to the bedroom and bats my nose until I wake up and let her under the covers.
Sneakers hitched a ride from one liberal h*ll hole to another liberal h*ll hole. Poor kitty.
Are you the crazy lady on the corner with 30 cats?
My two cats definately wouldn't qualify as doing that. The best I would qualify them as doing is "oh, cool", but not thrilled.
Of course the male couldn't show thrilled if he wanted to. Any sudden movement would cause him to knock himself out with his own belly fat.
heehee....you are the silly one.
All Your Smokey Cats are belong to us.
What a beauty!
I just lost my beloved Camelot at the age of 20. Lilliput lived to be 22 [still with decent quality of life].Let's hope that this family will have some good, happy years with their kitty before it dies of old age.
I, for one, would be thrilled beyond belief. Finding Camelot after he was lost for "only" 31 days was one of the biggest thrills of my lifetime. [O.K. --- we love our cats --- and it was not the ONLY thrill of our lifetime.]
You certainly are a cheerful soul, Kenny!
Useless, you say?! Don't you understand that your cat is alerting you to a perilously cold situation ... especially when the woodstove has gone out ... and then, at great personal sacrifice to her own comfort, gets under your cover to keep you warm? And, all this time you thought the cat just wanted to warm herself ... Silly Dawg!
LOL!
No! That's me!
Just kidding. I am down to "just" the two that live in the house, the one that lives at the cottage, and "Boston Blackie" who shows up from some unknown location because he likes the flavors of food we keep on hand for passersby and gypsies.
