I started over. Much better now.
91% complete in about 30 minutes.
Now I need to find the wireless card drivers...
Going to use ndiswrapper?
>>Going to use ndiswrapper?
Don't know -- what is it?
That's a compatibility layer that lets you use the Windows driver with Linux. I'm using it on two different laptops right now, and it works pretty good.
You'll need to either download the Windows driver for your wireless card, or use the manufacturer CD if you have it.
I can download the driver, no problem.
How do I install ndiswrapper?
If you have Yahoo or AOL messenger, I can walk you through it step by step. Freepmail me.
ndiswrapper comes with Mepis.
You may get lucky and Mepis could very well find your wireless out-of-the-box.
OS/390? That's so... so... stone age!!
You need z/OS. I think 1.7 is available.
(actually, I only recently directly updated a 2.10 box to new hardware running 1.6, so I'm pullin yur leg!)
It did find my external network card on install (which made it better than pclinux). I was pretty impressed with how well it found everything on my old laptop (usb, usb hub, usb mouse, proper video, etc.)
ping...
If it didn't get your wireless working when you had it running live, you'll probably be able to get it working with ndiswrapper. Let me know when you're ready...I'll be up a while longer.
Thanks amigo
Dude!
Mepis rocks -- found my wireless card no problem (just required setting my WEP settings and rebooting)!
Fast, too (now that it is installed on the HD).
I didn't mess with the dual boot -- this laptop has literally been gathering dust for a year. I didn't care what was on it before.
Do you know if it has built-in Bourne and Korn shell?
Next, I am going to get DB2 and MySQL and see if I can piggyback a license for Oracle.
In another life (10+ years ago) I was a Unix sysprog -- now I get to see if I can get it all back (although things have changed a LOT in 10 years).
Well, folks, I got it all working.
First off -- THANK YOU! I didn't know where to start. All of your advise was extremely helpful.
I started out trying pclinuxos, since it looked like it was the most complete. But I had a major video driver problem that I just couldn't seem to solve (and debugging takes FOREVER on liveCD mode). It also didn't seem to properly detect my network card (my onboard network connection is dead). So after tinkering with a day (and teaching myself about iso images, etc.), I ginally have up and looked back here.
When I cast my net, Mepis looked pretty easy, so I grabbed it and installed it. With the encouragement of FLAMING DEATH, I got it going, liked what I saw, and installed it on the HD (overlaid Windows for you real Linux-lovers).
It has found all my peripehrals and looks like it is working great! Thanks again for all your help.
Ad Ernest, can you direct me to the "tech thread" for future guidance?
Man, FR is the greatest (as I have said in the past and I say again)!
I never messed with UNIX much, but downloaded a live UNIX CD once just to see how similar it was.
For the most part, everything looked familiar enough that I could probably use it without much trouble after a few days. There were small differences...I can remember the drive nomenclature being different, etc. If you have (or had) a working knowledge of UNIX, I'd think you'd be able to pick it up fairly easily.
Of course, Mepis does a lot of work to keep you away from the command line, too. In my opinion, it's one of the better distros for that.
I don't know about Bourne and Korn, because I usually don't mess with such things. If it doesn't, go to Synaptic (Start>System>Synaptic). It will prompt you for your root password, then it will start the program. Do a search for each one. If you find them, simply click the checkbox by it and then click "Apply" at the top and follow directions. It will install them automatically, and I think it might add them to the System menu (Start>System).
Should be able to get MySQL from Synaptic (Start>System>Synaptic Package Manager).
Glad it worked out for you. Have fun with your "new" old toy!
Well, I don't want to take all the credit. Originally, it was Echo Talon's suggestion, I believe, but I definitely seconded it, because Mepis is good stuff. Be sure to send him a thank-you ping, too.
Scratch that Tech Thread ping. Got it solved.
Glad to hear the old laptop has a new life....
Thanks FD
mepis rules(as far as linux goes) have you tried the new beta distro? Its based on Untuntu, still has Mepis goodness, its not 100% perfect i'd wait a couple days for the Mepis 6.0 Beta2 due out in a couple days. Cheers
