LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Nintendo Co. Ltd on Thursday said it has named its new video game console "Wii, which it said is pronounced "we" to emphasise that the console is for everyone.
The console up until now has been known by its code-name "Revolution."
"While the code-name Revolution expressed our direction, Wii represents the answer," spokeswoman Perrin Kaplan told Reuters.
Nintendo, best known for its Game Boy portable video players, aims to gain share in the $25 billion (18.9 billion pounds) global video game market now dominated by Sony Corp.
Microsoft Corp. launched its next-generation Xbox 360 console late last year and Sony's new PlayStation 3 is due in November. Wii also is expected to hit store shelves later this year.
While the new consoles from Microsoft and Sony boast more power and high-definition graphics, Nintendo's goal is to roll out a machine that appeals to a broader audience than the young males who make up the traditional console gaming market.
A key feature of the Wii is its one-handed controller that looks like a television remote control and uses motion-detection sensors that allow players to control the game by wielding it like a sword, waving it like a conductor's baton, or swinging it like a baseball bat.
Nintendo'd've been better off naming it the Nii.
I'm still going to call it Revolution.
The controller and 7 in 1 console(Turbografix, NES, SNES, N64, Gamecube, Revolution, Sega Genesis) ideas are nice ideas, and I plan on buying it.
But the name? Oh come on Nintendo!
There are already a bunch of puns going around.
WiiFi.
Knights Who Say Wii.
Wii hate the name.
Wiitarded.
And one joke involving the DS' "touching is good" slogan and "wii wii." I'm not making it.
My hopes for the success of this console just dimmed with this announcement. Wii!??? Stupid name. Revolution was better. I hope they stick with it and drop this nonsense.
Theres this one:
Thanks to Chuck Berry now we have an unofficial theme song:
When I was a little bitty boy
my grandmother bought me a cute little toy
Silver bells hangin' on a string
she told me it was my wii, wii
My wii wii, my wii wii
I want to play with my wii wii
My wii wii, my wii wii
I want to play with my wii wii
And then mother took me to Grammer School
But I stopped all in the vestibule
Every time that bell would ring
catched me playin' with my wii wii
Once I was climbing the garden wall
I slipped and had a terrible fall
I fell so hard I heard bells ring
but held on to my wii wii
Once I was swimming cross Turtle creek
many snappers all around my feet
Shure was hard swimming cross that thing
with both hands holdin' my wii wii
This here song it ain't so sad
the cutest little song you ever had
those of you who will not sing
You must be playin' with your own wii wii
My wii wii ,Your wii wii, your wii wii
We saw you playin' with your wii wii
My wii wii everybody sing
I want to play with my wii wii
This little piggy went wii, wii, wii, all the way home.
Wii are not amused.
I am getting one!
I already have my 360 and I will be getting the PS3 as well.
They might as well have called it the Nintendo Inferior. I'm going to stick with Revolution, also.
Maybe "Wheeee!" would have been a better name?
That's really wiik.
I think they were smoking a little Wiid when they came up with this name.
The games could be fun, however, and I don't mind the controller as much as some people seem to. If they have good versions of Mario Golf, Mario Party, and Smash Brothers, it will do well. If there's a golf game or sword fighting game where I can swing the controller, it'll do even better. :)
The $2k price for a development kit is extermely nice, also. Hopefully that will encourage more independent developers to come up with some really imaginative games.
I also forgot the fact that it's compatible with EVERY NINTENDO GAME EVER MADE is a huge selling point, especially for myself.
you think this pick up line will work at a bar?
"hey girl, you want to come back to my place and play with my wii?"
