DURHAM -- Results from the second round of DNA tests in connection with the Duke lacrosse rape investigation will not likely be available before May 15, District Attorney Mike Nifong said Saturday.
Nifong also denied an allegation by some defense attorneys that the second exotic dancer at the March 13 party where the rape allegedly occurred received special treatment from Nifong's office so she'd cooperate with the prosecutor.
Kim Roberts, 31, was arrested March 22 -- eight days after the lacrosse party -- on a probation violation from a 2001 conviction for embezzling $25,000.
The same day a grand jury indicted lacrosse players Reade Seligmann and Collin Finnerty, a judge agreed to a change so that Roberts would no longer have to pay a 15 percent fee to a bonding agent. Nifong signed a document saying he would not oppose the change.
Soon after the rape allegation was made, Roberts told defense attorneys that she doubted the story of her colleague who told police she was dragged into a bathroom and raped. But in an interview last week with the Associated Press, Roberts said she thinks some players -- she's not sure which ones -- are guilty.
"It seems she is receiving very favorable financial treatment [from prosecutors] for what she is now saying," said Bill Thomas, a defense attorney for one of the lacrosse players who has not been indicted.
Nifong said Saturday that wasn't his motive in agreeing to change Roberts' bond from secured to unsecured.
"It's consistent with local bonding policy," Nifong said, when asked why he supported the change.
Nifong, who faces two challengers in the May 2 Democratic primary, attended a meet-and-greet with supporters Saturday at Joe & Jo's Downtown Restaurant and Pub, where he fielded a few questions from The Herald-Sun.
Nifong ordered the second round of DNA tests from a private lab after initial tests by the SBI crime lab in Raleigh failed to find DNA from any of 46 lacrosse players tested on or in the accuser, nor any of her DNA in the bathroom in which she said she was raped, sodomized, beaten and strangled for 30 minutes by three men.
Some defense attorneys had said they expected the new DNA test results last week.
If they play again, I surely will go to support them.

Duke Universitys president canceled the mens lacrosse teams season and accepted the resignation of its coach today, hours after Durham County authorities disclosed an e-mail message written by a team member saying he planned to invite strippers to his dorm room, kill them and cut off their skin.
The e-mail message was sent shortly after a party three weeks ago at which a woman has said she was raped by three members of the team. The message was disclosed this morning when the authorities unsealed a search warrant that was executed March 27 on the students dormitory room and vehicle.
The court released today a previously sealed warrant, whose contents are sickening and repulsive, Richard H. Brodhead, Dukes president, said in a statement. I have canceled the mens lacrosse season and all associated activities, effective immediately. Lacrosse Coach Mike Pressler has submitted his resignation to Athletic Director Joe Alleva, effective immediately.
The e-mail message was sent March 14 at 1:58 a.m., 36 minutes after a grocery store security guard called 911 to summon the police because the woman appeared intoxicated and refused to get out of a car. When the police arrived, the woman told them she had been raped and assaulted. The accuser was one of two women hired to dance at the party.
Thanx for Lax Ping!
Yep - knew this too. Was made into a so so movie staring Lauren Bacall in the title role. She died old, alone and bitter with everyone trying to take advantage of her. I never knew Furman was part of the Duke Endowment until I took my son there to look at the campus and discovered they had just finished the "Duke Library".
Before this internet thingy we oldsters had to read books. Here's a good one I once read about the origins of Duke
"The Dukes of Durham"

That seems to explain things, the second sealed warrant was the McFadyen dorm room search.
I imagine so.
Thanks for the info--
Bissey called it a short shirt ... but he also said two women got out of "a car."
JASON BISSEY, LIVES NEXT DOOR TO ALLEGED CRIME SCENE: I noticed a car drive up and two young women get out, met with the gentleman and then walked back to the back of the house. Two young women, one of them dressed in a short skirt and high heels, and the other woman was dressed a little more conservatively spoke with the gentleman outside of this door here briefly, and then at this point, all of the young men were inside. They spoke amongst themselves for about five minutes or so and then entered the house.

But Bissey thinks they came together in the same car, so I'm not sure how accurate his observations are.
Well it's been speculated that when Mangum was dropped off she first got into Roberts car to do some planning. Bissey may have come out in time to see them get out "together".
Thanks for that book suggestion. I'm a huge reader of business history....
Maybe they came in two separate cars; but then Crystal walked over and got into Kim's car. Bissey saw them get out together? If a little chemical "assistance" was taken at this point, it might fit into understanding (using the time frame) of Crystal's falling down later. Date Rape drugs takes 20-30 mins to begin taking effect, according to data supplied in earlier threads.
You're correct. There is a second house on Urban Street which is/was occupied by lacrosse players.
Rita Cosby quoted him as saying "I noticed a car drive up and two young women get out," so he is wrong on that account. He also says "And at that point, the young women were coming back out of the house, getting into the car and driving away." No way that's true either because Mangum was helped/carried to the car with the help of a player. Anything the guy says is suspect.
I remember that now.
Hmmmmmm....
Very odd.
There's a fascinating chain of events. You'll enjoy it.
I think he means prior to Mangum attempting to reenter the house to get her shoe. But, then again, I'm not sure either.
I wonder if Bissey is in the habit of enjoying a doobie on the front porch when he gets home from work late in the evening.
I read someplace that he was out smoking on his front porch, so maybe.....
I've been wondering why Reade got the cab at Urban and Watts and not at Buchanan.
Perhaps after Kim announced "the show is over!" at 12:04 Reade and a few of the guys walked around the corner to the Urban house. There they quickly decided to just call it a night, and it is from there that Reade called the taxi, telling the cab to pick him and his friend up on the corner of Urban and Watts.
Would make sense that the sophomore Reade might have been better buds with the guys living in the Urban house (esp. if underclassmen) than to the senior team captains living in the Buchanan house.
