Visual Studio 2005 Express Announcements!
Dear Visual Studio Express community,
We are incredibly excited to announce that effective April 19th, 2006, all Visual Studio 2005 Express Editions including Visual Basic, Visual C#, Visual J#, Visual C++, and Visual Web Developer Express will be free permanently!
Prior to this pricing announcement, Visual Studio Express Editions were promotionally discounted to be free for one year, starting on November 7th, 2005. With this announcement, the promotional discount for Visual Studio Express is now permanent and Express will continue to be free.

Its not about where I plan to run the code now its about how much crap I might have to pull out of it should I, gasp, want to reuse some of the code on another system. I have seen times when the functionality of an entire black box has to be rewritten because it would take more time to strip out and replace code which wont compile elsewhere.
This is not unique to MS I feel the same way about power builder.

And worth every penny! I've never tried the express edition, but IMHO, VS 2005 enterprise is pretty damn good.

This is Microsoft's effort to keep developers from moving to other platforms. The software development tools for Linux and Mac OS X have always been available for free.
Visual Studio is not a great IDE, but this announcement is good news.

Yep, I agree.. Linux and Mac OS X have been steadly gaining support and MS is worried. ..which proves, competition is a good thing.
