Free as in beer!
May a million web apps blossom!
And worth every penny!
How does one go about getting his "free" copy of Visual C???

Go there and either download the express installer, about 2.5mb for each Express Edition, or download (manual) an iso image and burn it to CD. Each iso image is about 450MB, so you would need a cable\dsl connection.
Ping for later!

The Express Editions were free for eternity from the start, however they would only be available for download for a year.
The Standard Edition is available for the cost of watching 3 free webcasts. The BIG difference is the dependencies. The Express Editions require several other files not "normally" installed on a WindowsXP system. The Standard Edition can compile a C or C++ source (not .NET) to an executable with no such dependencies.
Visit MicroSoft's web site. They are giving away a lot of goodies there.
Ive always been skittish about using too much Visual $LANG applications, too much incompatability with anything else.
What were you going to execute it on?

Since Visual Studio only compiles to Windows OS executables, what are you referring to?
Big mistake MS made when originally coming out with Dot Net, was not providing free developer editions of Visual Studio .NET.
The C# and VB compilers were provided free from the start, the C / C++ came shortly thereafter. The Visual Studio has been recently offered for free, though apparently not at this moment.
I got my free copy of Visual Studio 2005, standard at the November release in Dallas, value = $300. Also SQL server 2005 for free, value = $800.
LATER
I got my copy at the same time. It's does address a lot of my issues with the previous .NET edition. I do mostly Java development myself, and even Sun has recently made all their developer tools free as well.
