Expectant mom dies in collision
A 27-year-old expectant mother died in a head-on collision Sunday on U.S. 31 in Shelby County, authorities said.
Sarah Porter, 27, of Jemison died in the 11:20 a.m. accident, said Sgt. Tim Sartain, Alabama State Troopers spokesman. She was six months pregnant, said Doug Ballard Jr., Shelby County coroner.
Her husband, 29-year-old Heath Porter, remained in critical condition at UAB Hospital Sunday night, said Bob Shepherd, hospital spokesman.
Marco Guarviola, 26, address unknown, a passenger in the 2003 Chevrolet pickup truck that collided with the Porters' 2002 Volkswagen, was also taken to UAB Hospital, where he was listed as critical Sunday night, Shepherd said.
Manuel Valdez, 22, address unknown, who was also in the truck, was taken to Princeton Baptist Medical Center. Efforts to reach a hospital spokesman Sunday night were unsuccessful.
The accident, which occurred in the Saginaw community just south of Alabaster, is under investigation, Sartain said. He declined to provide details.
Several serious accidents have occurred at the site, Sartain said.
"I don't understand why so many accidents have occurred at this particular location," Sartain said. "Traffic is moderately heavy, but the street is a straight, two-lane stretch."
Accident fatalities are always sad, Sartain said.
"But this happening on Easter Sunday is such a tragedy," he said.

Plus we're a cult, like Scientology, and have to defend our members. Did you get the secret message about the next Freeper we're going to gang up on and personally attack?
Oh, was I not supposed to mention that out loud? ;-)
If you have to say it out loud, say it in Spanish...
Sarcasm escapes you, does it not?
Um... I only remember "donde es el bano" and "una mas cerveza, por favor". Don't tell the homeschool crowd, they'll think I'm lettting the team down.
I see the offending editorial comment in the title has been removed...
I'm bored and don't have any pressing work to do this morning. Hand me some of that popcorn, wouldya?
The last thread we mobbed in defense of our own was more fun though.
Yes, but that's still not the original title.
And we're not serving popcorn. You can stay for nachos.
This is another thing I find interesting on this thread. Several people have commented indignantly that an "American baby!" was killed, with no mention of the fully grown woman the American Baby was inside.
You'd think an adult woman would merit a passing mention... :]
That's amazing. You're more concerned with those pursuing truth than confronting a person who adds unsubstantiated information to a headline.
The fact that we're all Hobbit Holers is irrelevant.
I'm going to behave myself over here in a corner... :~D
I didn't "jump" her. I asked her how she knew the other driver was a Mexican immigrant.
I get the impression you are playing with her and I wonder why.
Well, she is acting a little loopy by crying out that she is being attacked when all that was asked is "where's your source?"
Please notice that this source has still not surfaced.
mmmmm....nachos....
We just purchased a new vehicle yesterday and the insurance company asked for our driver's license number.
To the contrary. We asked her to document her "information" and reason for altering the title.
When she could not, she called us "immigration apologists" who belong at DU.
When RMDupree made that statement, you called it BS.
I'm now curious about how many illegals are involved in accidents each year.
Oh, that information is out there. And I'm sure the numbers are justfiably high.
But, once again, no one has denied the problem of illegal immigration and all the associated societal ills.
But, it is simply ludicrous to assert that this woman and her child would be alive if the borders were sealed. We don't know that. We can't prove that.
Would things be a lot better if we solved the problem of illegal immigration? Sure.
Would there be fewer traffic accidents if we solved the problem of illegal immigratoin? Perhaps.
But the fact remains that illegal immigrants are not the only cause of accidents in this country. Nor are they the only ones driving without a license. We had two teenagers killed (and two severely injured) last month when the kids (from a good anglo-saxon upscale family) took off in mom's car in the middle of the night.
Securing the borders would not have saved their lives. Securing their butts in their bedroom might have.
The fact remains that you cannot say this woman and child would be alive if the borders were secure.
AFAIK, we still don't ~know~ who was at fault in this accident.
You don't bother me, Michael. At least you're willing to look up information to back up what you're saying.
I'm still waiting for Full Court to do the same.
