Free Republic *Pager* stopped working after latest MS Security update - [ActiveX control]
Hair

Posted on 04/16/2006 3:36:36 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Ever since the last Automatic Update from MS, the FR pager has stopped working right. When it tries to work I get the popup below.

My husband has played around with the settings in IE at Tools-Internet Options-Security, but enabling Activex Controls there is not fixing it.

Running XP Home SP 2 - all up to date...
IE 6.0
MS Antispyware
PC-Cillan

Not sure which of these is stopping me up or where to look.

Actually, a lot of things have stopped working in IE since this update installed itself this morning. I am sending error reports - everybody else should do likewise, and send MS an e-mail about it, too.

I haven't gotten any other errors. What else is going on with you?

I can't go back in my browser anymore. It freezes and I have to open another window. Everything was fine until this a.m. Windows installed something like 6 updates and security patches this morning, btw. I guess there was some kind of threat, but it looks to me like they may have gotten something wrong in their fix for it!

Well I'm just pinging you to make your pager go off :~D

I'm in Firefox at the moment, but I am NOT at home here.

(yet... my husband says)

Why is everything so big?

Actually, a lot of things have stopped working in IE since this update installed itself this morning.

One good reason to not let auto updates install by themselves. I don't mind being notified but I like to choose when they get installed.

The fonts are slightly different, but after a week or so you won't notice it. I wouldn't even have IE on my computer if it weren't for the wife needing it for certain banking sites that require the use of a more venerable browser. I occasionally use IE to test some Group Policy Settings I may be tweaking for the computers at work while I'm at home.

I have had it since day one when I got my computer back in the 90's and my kids and I find it the easiest to use -- never have any problems unless Microsoft in this instance got involved. Had the same screen name forever and don't feel like changing. I bring along DSL so I don't pay that much monthly and I hate Explorer! :)

Besides I like to take after liberals on the message boards. A lot of features now built in that work really well!

I've been telling Hair to switch to Firefox for years now, and this is what it finally took for her to say "OK".

She's not completely happy with it yet, but I can keep tweaking it for her.

I spend all day on my computer and I knew where everything was before and now it looks different!

I don't like change. I even understand what PhiKapMom means with her AOL comfort zone. ;~D

Here's some good tweaks for speeding it up, dramatically in some cases if you are on broadband.

One of the companies I work for has a message where we enter the portal that says not to download anything from Microsoft until further notice.

Well, it's a cool feature.... Is it working for you in IE?

I'm still in Firefox and it's working, but I still get the error in IE. I'm sure there's something about it that can be fixed in my settings, I just don't know what.

IF the problem is the change in Active-X controls initiation, you might get some useful information from: Internet Explorer ActiveX compatibility patch for Mshtml.dll

More specfically there is a 'compatibility' patch that returns Active-X behavior to what it was before the security patch (without reducing the security of the system) at: MS06-013: Cumulative security update for Internet Explorer
