I received some money recently. I have decided to put a portion of it aside to spend on retrofitting the house and packing in some supplies for 6 for a year.
I want to be able to rotate the supplies through our regular pantry. I also will be retrofitting our well to pump into a holding tank...and I am looking for a good wood cookstove, I have a big jotol in the living room.
Candles, oil lamps whatever. Your input and links would be appreciated.
White does last much longer. The oils in red and brown can go bad, although I think it still takes quite a while for it to happen.
And try to keep the stuff cool. 60-70 F is probably best.
Re #113
WOW!! Nice work Chickensoup. Thanks for adding things not on my lists. Guess I need do some updating. :-)
Nobody has mentioned cartons of cigarettes yet.
Thank you. Your thoughts would be appreciated.

I dont smoke so I didnt put it in. If I were a smoker, I would get cans of tobacco and rolling papers. Fresher.
I rarely drink but did add liquor. Good anesthetic.
It's a great quality time activity for you and the family. And it will help you and the kids learn real world survival skills (or keep them fresh). Learn and do what is appropriate to your environment. For example if you live where it snows enough build and spend the night in a snow cave before it's an emergency. Get the complaining out of the kids systems while hiking for fun. Fill those little heads with survival skills.
It will also help you trim down your 'on the move' list to an even shorter 'on the move walking' list. You will spend money shedding weight. But you will have the correct number of backpacks reasonably loaded with enough gear to keep the flock alive for a couple of days or more. Your flock also will have made their tenderfoot mistakes while it's not so critical. Water filters good enough to backpack on are good enough to keep you hydrated at home also. They will drastically cut the need to stockpile water. Mine works both pumped and gravity feed (the bag doubles as a reservour, 'First Need' brand from REI) I recommend it. The last thing you want to do at the end of hike is pump your water filter.
Add rubberized canvas type folding bucket to your 'on the move walking' list.
Maintain good boots for everybody. That alone will cost a fortune with growing kids.
Barter item.
Did you include a book on edible plants? Just thought of it.
Tobacco would be an EXCELLENT barter item. Couple packs of smokes might get you a tank of gas.
You are right, tobacco would be a good barter item.
Never thought of it...I am more the Room-service-and-truffles type. But the little angels belong to scouting type organizations. My 10 year old son slept out this winter in 20 below weather this winter.
An excellent idea, provided such things are available into the near future.
Remember, they have to be rotated.
Tobacco and tobacco products make good barter items. So will, ammo, tea, coffee and other desired imports.
Was this mentioned? You can purchase a Solar heated 5-Gallon PVC Camp Shower for about ten dollars. Just hang it on a tree if necessary.
I've got one of those!
I'll tell ya what, even if it's like 65 degrees out, you put this thing is the full sun for four hours or so, you get a comfy shower out of it!
If a person purchased a second solar heated camp shower, is the water warm enough to be used for washing dishes, or washing socks and underwear?
Absolutely. I guess you could get basically the same effect if you filled some large black garbage bags with water.
ACE hardware has some very nice 7 mil garbage bags, very heavy duty.
Tabasco would be a nice addition to the list. Almost all foods can be improved by adding Tabasco.
Another good addition to the pile is corn starch. When you're cooking in a way you're not used to, or cooking things that are new to you, or you don't have exactly the right ingredients, corn starch is a great thickener and can help make a meal much more palatable.
And while I'm at it, throw in some non-dairy powdered coffee creamer. Lasts for a real long time, and can be used as a milk/butter substitute in recipes that call for it.
Absolutely. And an old-fashined pencil sharpener can be used to make fire-starting tinder from pencils.
