Comedy Central Censored Mohammed

I'm not sure if it's been reported yet, but for what it's worth, I just got off the phone with a Comedy Central spokesman. I asked him about last night's episode of South Park in which, at a moment right before the prophet Mohammed was supposed to make a cameo, the words, "Comedy Central has refused to broadcast an image of Mohammed on their network" appeared on the screen.

I asked him whether this truly was Comedy Central's decision or whether this was just another gag (with South Park, you never know). He said:

They reflected it accurately. That was a Comedy Central decision.

So does this mean the "Super Best Friends" episode (featuring Muhammed as one of the SBF) will never ever be seen again on CC?

Probably. Maybe they're afraid of offending the moderate Muslims. Of course the moderate Muslims aren't offended. They're secretly laughing with the rest of us.

OK, even though I missed half of last week's episode, I definitely have to catch the replay of this week's.

I didn't think they would slap CC like they did without a reason.

Exactly my sentiments. I thought South park had cojones to rip everyone and everything a new A-hole regardless how offensive.

more updates linked from Michelle Malkin

***Update II: Reader Jason E. writes, "The uncensored version of the show is already available on various P2P file sharing sites. I just watched the bit with Mohammed. It’s the same Mohammed that is shown in previous episodes, he walks in, gives Peter a salmon helmet?, says jihad, jihad a couple times and leaves. OBTW don’t know if you are aware but apparently Mohammed is briefly visible during the opening credits. I was not able to confirm this myself even after several viewings." (Ed. note: I didn't see it, either, but several other readers have mentioned this)***

***Update III: AP covers the story:

Parker and Stone were angered when told by Comedy Central several weeks ago that they could not run an image of Muhammad, according to a person close to the show who didn't want to be identified because of the issue's sensitivity. The network's decision was made over concerns for public safety, the person said. Comedy Central said in a statement issued Thursday: "In light of recent world events, we feel we made the right decision." Its executives would not comment further.

I still think the show... or at least the ~ending~, was directly because they knew the image would be censored.

It doesn't make sense otherwise.

They either rewrote it after this decision, or they knew this would happen going in, and knew that CC would black out the Mohammed, but not the crapping... thus exposing the silly hypocrisy of the whole thing.

Cartman telling Butters to go take one for the team by being molested is OK, but the Prophet of Doom cannot be shown. Something is wrong here. Either it is all OK to air or none of it.

Uh... there's no way that this was actually a last-minute censorship of the episode. If it wasn't originally designed to be "censored" it would have blown the punch line scene afterward. Clearly, Comedy Central is playing along with the joke.

I'm pretty sure that Matt and Trey asked upfront if Comedy Central would air a cartoon of mo-ham-head, and CC said no, this is why they did this, to show that CC is just like Isaac 'Chef' Hayes, they'll take the money all the way to the bank unless. . . with Chef it hit too close to home, and with CC they are well, they are just, pussies.

I was wondering if anyone had done a frame by frame look. That's a lot of frames.

I thought it was brilliant that the South Park writers exposed comedy central's refusal to allow an image of Mohammed, then show Jesus crapping on the American flag. It really brought home the point

What point? That they only insult safe targets?

If Comedy Central won't let them show it, then they can publish it uncensored on the web some other way, can't they?

They won't do it. They're are relieved beyond belief that Comedy Central took the fall for them.

Cowards and hypocrites.

South Park was censored for images of the child-humping pervert? But not for their usual fare? WTF?????

As Cartman would say: Comedy Central can kiss mah black ass!

"What point? That they only insult safe targets?"

Exactly the opposite, I think they were begging the question "why is Jesus a safe target but Mohammed isn't even allowed to be shown?"
