Richard Hatch Says Galactica Continuation Would Have Been as Good as Moore's Re-Imagining

The latest issue of DreamWatch features an interview with actor Richard Hatch, who played Captain Apollo in the original Battlestar Galactica TV Series and now plays Tom Zarek in the Galactica remake.

Hatch talked about how he continues to feel that a continuation of the original series would have been just as successful as the Ronald D. Moore's re-imagining.

"I don't think a continuation would have been any less successful than a re-imagining," he stated firmly. "A continuation would have evolved the original show: it would have updated the Cylons, brought new characters in and gone into equally provocative areas. We could have had Eddie Olmos as the Commander, Mary as President, Jamie [Bamber] as Apollo's son, and Katee [Sackhoff] as Starbuck's Daughter. And we would have loved to have brought Ron Moore onboard too."

"A continuation would have had the best of both worlds – it would have had the values and positives of the old show but would have updated them for today. It also wouldn’t have had the problems the new show had in the beginning, when fans of the original felt upset and disappointed."

Additionally, a few years ago, Hatch created a visual proof-of-concept by executive producing, co-scripting, co-directing, and acting in Battlestar Galactica: The Second Coming. This is a 4-1/2 minute, professional film trailer by Hatch which illustrated his concepts for a new Battlestar Galactica TV Series or movie continuation of the original series.

"Cassiopeia was a fictional character in the original Battlestar Galactica which ran on ABC from 1978 to 1979. Cassiopeia also appeared in the 1978 theatrical release Battlestar Galactica. The role was portrayed by Laurette Spang.

"When we are first introduced to Cassiopiea, she is a refugee on the freighter Gemini, who escaped the destruction of the Twelve Colonies at the hands of the Cylons. Cassiopiea's former occupation was as a 'socialator', which is a euphemism for a prostitute, but this background is played down in the subsequent episodes of the series where she serves as part of the Battlestar Galactica's medical staff.

"She develops a romantic relationship with Lieutenant Starbuck early on, and this persists to the end of the series. Initially, she is a rival to Starbuck's other girlfriend, Athena, but Cassiopeia has clearly won the contest by later episodes.

"She is the one person that Chameleon trusts with the knowledge that he is Starbuck's father, and she is able to talk Starbuck out of fighting with Ortega.

"Earlier in life, Cassiopeia was romantically linked to Commander Cain and considered reuniting with him the Battlestar Pegasus was discovered.

"In The Return of Starbuck episode of the sequel series Galactica 1980, Starbuck tells Boomer to give Cassiopeia his love, when it appears he will not be able to return to the Fleet. Of course, he also mentions Athena!

"Cassiopeia's name is pronounced Cass-ee-oh-pee-ah with the emphasis on the third and fifth syllable, as opposed to the common pronunciation of the Greek goddess of the same name, which emphasizes the fourth syllable. She is often called 'Cassie' for short.'
