My daughter "Anoreth" and some of her conservative friends asked me to start a chat thread for them to discuss books, music, guns, education, whichever, and whatall. All young FReepers are welcome to join in.
This thread has the same premise as the "Undead Thread" - general discussion - only with a content level suited to younger people, if you get my drift. If there are many posts, a new thread can be started when the volume starts interfering with the programming.
I'll be stopping by now and then to keep an eye on things. Please read and follow the FR posting guidelines!
I'd like to post on your website blog sometime... if it's cool with your mom and everything. ;-)
I remember you saying you were into RPGs and fantasy... you ever play any of the Final Fantasy games? I'm probably going to get a copy of the FF I & II remake (Dawn of Souls) for gameboy... you know that Hollywood "Final Fantasy" movie that came out about two years ago had basically nothing to do with the game...but now they got a new direct to DVD movie out called "Final Fantasy: Advent's Children", which is supposedly a direct sequel to the FF VII game. I hope to check it out soon. If if you don't know what I'm talking about then nevermind. New topic. lol.
Anyway how are things at home? All your siblings been keeping you company? Dinnertime at your house must be entertaining at least. I only have two sibs.
Talk to ya later,
Bill
FYI, the whole sterotype that there are no Catholics in the south... well yeah you're right that there may be a significant following there in certain places... but in 90% of the south Catholics are a small minority of Christians. Maybe they ought to call the south the Protestant Belt. ;-)
Thought your mom might want to see this one too.

So how is it in N.C.? Are the protestants generally friendly to Catholics and other Christian denominations or no? My parents want to retire to N.C. so I'm a curious.
In our area, there doesn't seem to be much hostility between Catholics and Protestants. There was one incident in Charlotte a couple of years ago, where the pastor of a "Church of God" (I think - a large, urban congregation) said that they wouldn't participate in the Food Bank, the Homeless Shelter, Rescue Mission, or other citywide ministries because the Catholic churches also volunteered.
Anyway, the man's congregation told him to knock it off and keep his personal issues with Catholicism to himself - they planned to continue doing community service with Catholics!
There are individuals who harbor inter-religious hostility, but in the larger community, the divide is religious vs. secular.
At home.....
Well, things have been interesting. Elen had First Communion last weekend. I have Confirmation next weekend.
And Scouts this weekend.
It's been cold and rainy. Hopefully the weather will clear up before Saturday, when I'll be outside all day.
What I do isn't roleplaying as people normally do...it's like writing a story, I guess. But with a whole bunch of people, on the internet. Whole different deal.
I played Final Fantasy 7, I think, at a friend's house once. It got really boring after a while. I like action-type computer games better. Fighting or racing or even a Star Wars game occasionally, as long as I get to beat something/someone up.
My confirmation was a real pain, I'd sad to say. The "director of religious education" kept making me re-write the letter to the bishop asking permission, the guy they hired for our retreat was a real weirdo (kept playing Billy Joel songs), and my confirmation sponcer was late in flying into town for the event (though he did manage to make it at the last sec). And lastly, I tried to go the creative route and find a brand new saint for my confirmation name. (My middle name from birth is Matthew, after the gospel writer).
Needless to say, after going through page after page of boring stuffy old saints, I found St. Lawrence had been roasted alive on a spitfire, and he sarcastically laughed at them as they grilled him and said stuff like "hey you turn me over now, I'm fully cooked on this side"... so I was like "yeah!" That's a guy with some moxie! And so my confirmation name was Lawrence.
When my brother was confirmed, he asked me to be his sponcer... and probably regreted it as I tend to be pretty through with prepations! I gave him lenghthy quizes asking him stuff like "In what year was Christianity legalized?" "What is the Catholic Church's position on abortion?"
On the original topic... that's very cool that you're into fighting games...I really figured you were more the RPG/stragedy type who would go for Myst or something. I can say that although I'm very conserative, I think it's stupid to "censor" violent games. Anyone who's going to be inspired to rip someone's heart out cuz they saw it in Mortal Kombat was probably mentally unstable to begin with. You own any game systems? My family has pretty much every Nintendo system ever made except Virtual Boy and N64, as well as an XBox.
Confirmation's next weekend. This weekend I went to spend the day with a bunch of first-year Girl Scouts. It was...interesting. They all believe I control the weather, so I walk past and they STARE.
My RE teacher only made me rewrite mine twice, but that's because my first one was only a draft. Our second retreat people were ropes course guys, so we did a climbing wall. It was awesome.
I picked Peter (the apostle) for my saint name. Even though I'm a girl. I'd been planning it for 3 years, after we moved from Oklahoma and I learned I could recieve Confirmation at 15 instead of waiting till I was in 12th grade, which would've sucked. The other girls in my class think I'm even wierder now. It's funny.
I'm thinking my brothers will all ask me to be their sponsors, but I'll say no. They can find someone who isn't related to them. That's what they're supposed to do anyway. Plus I want them to put some effort into it and work up the guts to ask, like I had to. *grin*
We don't own any game systems. I play over at my friend's house. All she has is fighting games, anyway, which is fine with me. Strategy games get really boring after a half hour or so.
I don't get censoring violent games, either. They don't censor violent books or magazines. They don't even put a rating on them. Why games? All they really have to do is put a warning on it, for...overprotective..parents.
Hey, hows it going? Long time no talk again, eh? I wish more teens would take advantage of this thread but oh well. It must be pretty cool being home schooled cuz you dont have to wait 45 mins. to get back to your room everyday after your homeworks done.
You mentioned the activity with the scouts, so are you a Girl Scout yourself or just participating? I was in the boy scouts twice, but I never rose about the rank of Tenderfoot. President Gerald Ford was an Eagle Scout ya know. Lucky him, eh? Doesnt seem like the type.
And while were on current events, did you guys do anything after your confirmation? If youve seen those Jewish bar mitzvahs on TV, sometimes they throw the kid a huge party complete with strobe lights, neon glow sticks, all you can eat buffet, D.J., etc.
. geesh they treat 13 year olds like royalty. I also found out Spanish chicks who turn 15 or 16 get some kind of Quincensena or something like that, where they also treated royally. We must get the raw end of the deal. All I got when I turned 16 was a watch. Lol.
As for me Ive been working overtime lately and Im starting to look at Grad schools cuz I want to get my masters degree after my BA Its been in the 90s here in Illinois. I swear we have no spring season here, just winter and summer. If youve never been to the Chicago area, you should visit, we have a very awesome concert scene and some the biggest festivals in the world (Taste of Chicago, Jazz fest, etc.) during the summer months. Its very kick ass.
Right now, Im just frustrated cuz all the good movies are out in theaters but I havent had a chance to watch any of them. I really want to see United 93, X-men 3, Superman Returns, and Scary Movie 4, among others. Have you seen the first three Scary Movies? Really funny stuff.
Well, Im out. Laters
Doin' good.
I usually go outside as soon as possible when I'm done school. I spend a good amount of time in my room too, of course.
Yea, I'm a Girl Scout. My brothers (at least the ones who are old enough) are in Scouts. One's a Cub Scout, and the other just got his first class in Boy Scouts.
We had a few of my buddies and their family over after Confirmation. And we listened to rock music on the computer. Nothin' really special. They let me play DJ, though, as it wall all my music. ;D
I may go to Chicago at some point. Not for a while, though. Can't drive.
I wanted to see X-men. That's about all, though. I saw Underworld a few days ago. That was cool. Good effects.
Didn't see the Scary movies. Underworld's the only movie I've seen with a high rating, really. *shrug*
Hey I finally got aroudn to taking the "What kinda Dragon am I" quiz on your website. I'm a "Green" Dragon. How about that? Never thought of myself as the enviromental type. ::half smile::
My brother just rented the eequel to Underworld. I haven't seen either of 'em. He's your age, but good luck trying to talk to him online unless you play Worlds of Warcraft.
You have any summer plans? I'm hopign to go to Texas in July (my b-day)
TTYL
I went to camp last week at UNCC. Was fun. And I'm going to Steubenville Atlanta...like.....whenever it is.
I don't remember what kind of dragon I am.
Maybe I'll take it again later.
Don't play WoW. I probably wouldn't be allowed to if I wanted to, anyway.
Anyhoo... It's officially July 20th... my b-day! I was born on the anniversary of when we landed on the moon (of course I was born decades after it happened, but who's counting?)
Today's topic: I see that President Bush vetoed using taxpayer money to vaporize human embryo's. I must say, I'm suprised he went through his threat -- he's been pro-life but that's the first time he actually USED the veto stamp in his entire presidency. The last President to do NO VETOS was Garfield (and he had an good excuse, he dropped dead 6 monthes into office). I figured First Lady Laura would talk him into caving. Well, he didn't. Go Bush!
If I may ask, why wouldn't you be allowed to play Worlds of Warcraft? I don't play any MMORPGs myself, so it don't matter to me, but it does seem to be the venue of choice for tech-saavy teens into sci-fi and fantasy.
Oh and one last thing... the thing you say NEVER to mention around you. It's been damn hot lately, close to 100. So whatta think of the weather? lol.
TTYL!
I've been pretty busy.
Happy birthday. *grins*
....I'm glad Bush did that. Otherwise my grandma would be pretty mad. (along with other people, of course, but..)
Maybe now that he's taken the dust off the stamp he'll use it more often. Perhaps he's just wimpy about that. (*duck*)
My mom isn't big on RPGs. Something about being exposed to 'bad circumstances.' Although I don't think my dad would mind, personally. (He says) he did plenty of that when he was my age.
I don't really have enough time for it, anyway. My tech-savvyness goes mostly into writing and web design.
And I'd play something more sci-fi if I were to take up RPGing anyway. Star Wars maybe.
The weather sucks. It's been really hot and humid here. Like, code red or something, I'm not really sure. Occasionally there's thunderstorms, in other parts of the county/state.
Drink lots of water.
Well I'm off to Texas for a week to finally spend some much needed summer vacation time. ;-) Never been there before.
Thanks for writing back so quickly. I guess you guys have lived all over the country, eh?
Rock on.
....yea, pretty much. Oklahoma, Texas, Tennesee, and North Carolina. At least we don't live in California. That's the one place my mom refuses to move.
Have fun. Where in Texas are you going?
Heh.
I don't think I've ever been to Austin for more than a half hour. I was born in San Antonio. We usually just pass through.
I don't think you'd annoy too many city Texans by being anti-Confederate. North Carolinians, however..you'd probably not get out of the state alive....
Everything's named after Revolutionary War-era people where I live. And Indian tribes. Pretty easy to explain the county's history (along with the next two in every direction).
My birthday's in late March. I don't know my 'sign', although I do know my Chinese zodiac animal (goat/sheep).
Mom's been watching my email.
Maybe I'll update my blog. It's not like anything's going on now...
I watched a little mockumentary tonite called "Confederate States of America", a "what if?" satire about what if the South won the civil war and slavery was still around in the 21st century.. There was a thread about it on FR -- they all hated it without even seeing the movie. People are saying it's liberal mumbo-jumbo anti-white crap, since Spike Lee was involved in promoting it, but I must say it's pretty good. It is a bit liberal biased but it's not like Robert E. Lee is portrayed as evil.
Anyway, it's SUPPOSED to be exagerrated and a joke, unlike Michael Moore where he claims all his lies are what "really" happened. This movie was sorta satire in the "Dr. Strangelove" sorta way. And I liked the "historical" footage, they spliced it into real stuff like Forest Gump and Shadow of the Vampire. Besides, if someone's gonna refuse to watch this movie because Spike Lee funded it, then they shouldn't watch Gods and Generals because Ted Turner & Jane Fonda funded it. I disgress.
But anyway I think I'm just gonna watch Silent Hill tomarrow and go back to regular ol' "mainstream" Hollywood stuff.
It's too bad you're into Star Wars more than Star Trek. I could go on and on about Star Trek but Star Wars is just "okay". I mean you take the whole "universe", and Empire Strikes Back was awesome, A New Hope was good, Revenge of the Sith was fun, Return of the Jedi was underwheming, and Phantom Menance/Attack of the Clones sucked monkey butt. The Star Wars Christmas Special sucked, the two Ewok movies sucked, I haven't seen the animated series but the animation style looks cheap and boring. By my count that's more sucky Star Wars stuff than good Star Wars.
Don't mean to diss your personal tastes though. See ya in September
--Bill
I've seen a few ST shows, but I didn't really get into them much.
I liked the SW movies better a year ago, certiantly. Here's my count:
I: Kinda sucked, although the end lightsaber fight was good.
II: Yea, this one sucked. Too much romance, not enough action.
III: Ok, I guess. Definately better than 1 and 2.
IV: I never did like 4 much, even though it's the original and all.
V: My favorite. Also the best one.
VI: Ok.....I thought the ending was a bit...weak...personally, but...
I really like the books more than the movies, actually. Most of the books actually have good authors.
The animated series didn't look all that good, by the bits and pieces of animation I saw. It did look cheap.
I'm hoping they'll make movies of the Timothy Zahn SW novels next. The really good ones.
It took forever for Lucas to do the "new" trilogy, now I heard he's never going to do a third trilogy. I wouldn't mind nine Star Wars movies, but certainly it would be better if someone else directed the next set.
You really ought to check out the Star Trek movies sometime, now that they're on infinite hiatus. The rule there is simple: the even-numbered movies rock, and the odd-numbered movies suck. Some people say the last one was an exception to the rule because everyone hated Star Trek: Nemesis (10), but I thought it was an improvement over the extremely boring 9th movie. I highly recommend the movies Star Trek 2, 3, 4, 6, and 8.
Soooo anyway, how are things at home? You been keeping busy with all your many siblings? I've been very busy this month: I had a organizational retreat, a political fundraiser I had to attend, and an upcoming H.S. reunion (which is weird, I only graduated from H.S. a few years ago, but it's like an all-school reunion for every class since 1956 or something)
I just wonder how come I never knew any cute conservative kick-ass chicks like you when I was in H.S. It Sucked. Does your mom let you date yet? You could probably find alot of cool guys.
TTYL
Bill
It's cuz all us cute conservative chicks are homeschooled, that's why. ;)
Actually, I'd probably be allowed to date someone now if my parents approved of him. However, I'm too busy right now for dating. Summer's better for such things. Although next summer I'll be old enough for a paying job, so I'll be busy anyway.
I've been keeping fairly busy. Youth Group started again, along with Scouts and various other activities, so the evenings are all pretty crowded. Otherwise, nothing much is new. I am doing practice SAT tests, since I need alot of work if I'm going to get to the colleges I want.
I'm busy going through Stargate with my brothers right now. We think Pat is a gou'ould. (He's been calling Ra on his calculator.) I don't think I've got time for another sci-fi series at the moment.
George Lucas can whip up a good plot (with the exeption of Star Wars II, which Really Sucked,) but he's not so good at screenwriting. He should leave it for other people.
