it's now been raining all night and still pouring this morning....everyone in Mobile is ecstatic! but I sure do hate walking my babies in the rain! and Jake is terrified of thunder so the little wuss has been in my arms all morning....
Oh, come on... when was she ever even close to being on pitch except for the 15 seconds or so during the song's climax?
RECAP TIME :
Hello folks from all around the Pacific, Atlantic and these United States. I'd like to welcome one more person to my growing mailing list ( just added it today ).
Anyway, here is a culling of opinions from various boards that I agree with ( adding my own two cents worth to the mix ).
So, you tell me you're looking forward to classic love songs night.... well, look forward no further. THERE AIN'T NOTHING CLASSIC THERE.
Other than one or two songs, most of the songs they picked were : A) NOT CLASSIC; B) UNFIT FOR THEIR PERSONALITY/STYLE. C) BORING SONGS.
One thing you should note about love songs
they play this songs for a purpose. If you are willing to listen to James Ingram or Al Green wail some of them love songs on the radio, you're either : A) Getting ready to seduce someone; or B) Wanting to put your arms around that HAWT classmate, friend, colleague in a slow, seductive, hot dance.
I am NOT SURPRISED that --- since no one is doing any seducing or dancing last night, it made for one of the blandest of shows this season. From one of the best ( STANDARDS NIGHT ) to the blandest !!! How's that for a roller coaster ride ? Might as well invest in the NASDAQ STOCK MARKET....
IN Sum -- Other than ONE PERFORMANCE, None of the 6 finalists were great and one of them ( GUESS WHO ) sucked big time and if there is anything to the idea of MERIT at all, she should be sent mercifully packing home ( and note -- I use the word -- SHOULD because after watching 5 seasons of this show, usually the worst left, tend to overstay their welcome ( e.g. Nikki Mckibbin, Carmen Rasmussen, Jasmine Trias, Scott Savol ).
About the only interesting parts of the show were watching the dysfunctional American Idol family go at it again ( why not make Jerry Springer a guest while we're at it ?). Tonight we saw among to other things --- Simon Cowell snap at host Ryan Seacrest for cutting him off mid-diatribe, and trying to guess if special guest and music producer David Foster was closer to having migraine or a stroke watching some of the six rehearse.
Guest music coach, Andrea Bocelli just "watched" ( figuratively ) with amusement and simply relaxed as the 6 contestants stretched their vocal chords to try to match his ( forget it ). Talk about Paula Abdul being wasted..... well, tonight's episode took the cake and gave another meaning to that word.
So, 6 contestants, 6 songs and more time to perform ( longer than the usual 90 seconds alloted for each of them).
So what do we learn about Andrea Bocelli ? Firstly, I learned that the name Andrea is male also ( even after I've known only FEMALE Andrea's in my life ). Why can't his parents avoid the confusion and simply name him Andre ? Or is it an Italian thing that you can add an "A" at the end of a name ? But really ?? You don't call Silvio, Silivia, Franco, Franca or David, Davida !!. So why call Andre, Andrea ? CONFUSING as calling female actress --- Glen Close ( when she coulda been named Gwen Close ).
I have one of Bocelli's albums that I play all the time --- SOGNO. One of the greatest displays of vocal power in the genre of LIGHT CLASSICS of all time ( IMHO ). Looks like he has released a new CD, produced by David Foster, who also appeared tonight. Foster produces records for artists like Celine Dion. He has won many Grammys.
As we get into his music room, he strikes us as a stern teacher as opposed to Bocelli who is just there to listen and give his ( as usual, patronizing ) opinion.
OK, On with the show. Sigh.
I think I see areola.
If Katharine was thinking on her feet last night I would have loved to hear her tell Simon (after he made that comment about her NOT being Whitney Houston) "That's right, I'm not a coke head who lets my hubby randomly beat the living #%@%* out of me...." And then give him that great McPhee smile!
Now that would be great TV!!
Paris and the Pickler in the bottom 2...
Paris to go home. "Thank you..."
At least she had panties on!
"I agree, assuming that by "training" you mean that she can be taught to fetch me a beer while I listen to someone else sing."
Too funny - the best quote of the night!!
I saw them live at The Village Gate in NYC in 1965 or 1966.
The Village Gate was a small cabaret type place. We had a table in the front that butted the stage. You could reach out and touch them if you wanted.
Also playing was Doc Sevrinson from the Johnny Carson Show.
I go way back too............lol
Katharine: Lovely face. Flabby body. Good voice with a limited range. Paula's right. When Katharine tries to force the music she has almost an angry sound. She simply is not a power singer, but tries to be and it's a mistake. As you've noticed several times, when she's relaxed and just jamming with the celeb coaches, she sounds much better. That's because her vocals are more toned down and mellow. For all her goofiness, Paula sometimes gives the contestants the best advice. She told Katharine to remember where her money notes were, and she's right. Let me put it this way: Katharine would do better trying to emulate singers like Patti Page and Rosemary Clooney than singers like Whitney Houston and Barbara Streisand.
Paris: Listening to her last night, it occurred to me for the first time that the girl's speaking voice DOES interfere with her singing voice. No question about it, Paris has talent. She has zero charisma, as I've said before, but part of that may be due to her young age. If I could give Paris some advice it would be to not sing another note after this contest and the summer tour until she first acquires the services of a top-notch speaking voice coach. The speaking voice can be modulated and improved, particularly in someone so young. I think that would also improve her singing voice. Why? It occurred to me that when she sings, Paris sounds more than a little like a boy going through the voice change.
Kellie: What can I say that others haven't already. Last week and this her vocal limitations have been on full display. What on earth possessed her to choose "Unchained Melody" is beyond me, because she simply does not have the vocal chops to handle a song like that. Jonny, do you remember Kelly Clarkson's high C note in her rendition of 'Natural Woman?' (Kids today call it a whistle note.) Compare your memory of it (or if you still have the video I sent you, maybe replay it) to Pickle's warbly, uncertain high note last night. The difference between someone who has a real, natural gift and exceptional range vs. someone like Pickle, who is, at best, a high-school-level chorus line singer could not be more stark. If Pickle doesn't go home tonight, the point will be made most clearly that this is no longer a singing contest.
Taylor: Although I started out the season not liking him at all, I really do like him now. Unfortunately, although I don't think that was a terrible performance, he simply is not stepping up his game. I'm beginning to think he can't step it up, and that we're seeing his limitations. I can't quite put my finger on what's missing from his performances, though. Last night my strongest impression was that he's coasting. Choosing relatively easy material and relying on a relatively big finish to his songs to keep him in the competition. But I don't know if I've got it right.
Chris: To be honest, my attention kept wandering during his performance. I don't know if it was due to his performance or to the late hour when I watched my recording of the show. Chris is the most theatrical and possibly the most commercially viable of the remaining contestants for the current musical era. He has a decent voice, no question about it, but he just doesn't do it for me.
Elliott: Best of the night by far. Elliott brings something to his music that Paris, Katharine and Chris should learn, and that's subtlety. Elliott is a vocal artist. So is Taylor, or he tries to be, but of the two, Elliott is much better in my opinion. The others are just singers.
Something I want to say about Elliott's backstory. Unlike Pickle, who has used (or the show has used) her backstory to death, if I recall correctly we only heard about Elliott's deafness once. But his disability has a direct bearing on his ability to sing. That he sings so well despite it is truly amazing. Like Elliott, my father was deaf in one ear. I know the challenges of that particular disability. Elliott does not have "stereo" 360 degree hearing like the rest of us. He can only partially hear himself and the band, yet he is always on pitch and always in time to the music. He chooses difficult songs, often the most difficult of a given night, yet his phrasing is good and his key changes are smooth, all without a lot of unnecessary vocal gymnastics. Early on I tagged him as having the best voice of the males, now I think his performance skills are catching up. It sure doesn't hurt that the makeover people have done a very good job with him. I think of all this year's contestants, Elliott is the one I most want to have a viable career when this season is over.
That's supposed to make me feel better?
LOL. Some guy just called in to Rush's show and gave out a shout out to the Soul Patrol. Wasn't you was it? ;)
Acaller on Rush just gave a shout out to the "SoulPatrol...WHOO!!" LOL
For minute of Kat seemed pretty good. I stopped for the judges comments and wondered what the hell I missed? I'll watch the full thing tonight but can't imagine it was that bad. Her, "I'm the best don't you know" stage presence keeps me from watching her. i just have to close my eyes and listen...
Elliot - for the 91st week in a row i don't get his voice. He's good but I have never had a "wow" moment with him singing or on stage. Sorry. Doesn't do it for me.
Kellie - sucked. Simple as that. LMFAO when Andrea correctly called the color of her hair. I also think Foster wanted her gone that why he convinced her to go for the high note. It was a vacant and poor performance.
Paris - I listed to the first four seconds, realized it was a Streisand song. I hate Streisand. FFW to the judges comments.....
Taylor - I love Taylor's passion on stage and hate it when he puts the microphone in the stand. Last nigth had glimpses of Taylor being Taylor but for the most part it was boring. One of his bottom two performances for me.
Chris - stole the show IMHO. Good vocal and great performance. Very passionate and gave the alt-rock diehards something to be happy with with a few of the notes. Again, for those who think he "screams" everything, you obviously aren't objectively listening. It's his to lose IYAM.
Bottom three - will not be surprised if it is the three girls. If not Kat it will be Elliot. I just don't think he plays in Peioria.
Should go home - Kellie. She is by far the worst contestant left and way out of her league.
Will go home - Paris.
"Pickler's fan base is eroding"
It's clear to most people that Pickler is by far the least talented. Is her fan base is eroding or is it just that pissed off people whose (more talented) favorites have been voted out are deciding to vote for anybody but Kellie? I picked her to make it to the top 2 on the strength of her fan base, but now I'm wondering if I may have underestimated the voting of people actively wanting to prevent her from going farther. Call it the prophylactic vote. hehe
Agree with you that Katharine needs to stop taking blasters like Whitney or Celine as her models. If I were coaching her, I think I'd have her listening to Jane Monheit CD's continuously for the next week or so.
