Why I Support President Bush and the ZOT!
Posted on 03/19/2006 6:29:28 AM PST by thousand dollar hamburger
I think he has a sincere desire to help everyone. he has even gone out of his way to embrace people like Hillary Clinton and Ted Kennedy. He does not hold grudges as shown by his willingness to bend over backwards to allow terrorist supporting nations to operate our ports. We need this type of benevolent leader.
Our President is not a cheapskate, as he has opened up our budget to give to anyone who might need anything.
Aliens from all nations are welcomed into our great country without having to deal with mundane bureaucratic State approval. Cutting government red tape -- that's the Bush way!
Yes, our Prseident even realizes that occupying as many countries around the world as possible is the best way to spread American ideals.
We are truly lucky to have this great man. I suggest that at 10:00 AM EST, we all stand up in unison and shout -- HOORAY FOR BUSH!!!

Well.......I will admit to having had a pretty depressing last week and a half. Don't want to discuss it on the forum though.
Slightly worse than your probs you told me about.
Other than that, I'm fine.

We could go deeper into this if you'd like, but I have to ask this first: Are you knowledgable in Greek? I studied Greek for a year, but I've likely forgotten most of that, as I have little occasion to use it. Still, I have a copy of Gingrich and Arndt's Greek-English lexicon into which I very infrequently poke my nose.
How early can you date this legend?
From all I've read, the legends surrounding the Ka'ba that tie it to Adam, Abraham, Ishmael, Hagar and Gabriel arise from Q'ranic accounts, which would place their origins somewhere around 630A.D; about the time Mohammad invented them.
Variously called the "Ancient House", and the "Temple of Seth", the Ka'ba itself is a far older structure, having been a spiritual hub in Mecca for hundreds of years prior to Mohammad. About 400 years before Mohammad was born, or about 170A.D., a man named Amr ibn Lohai erected a carnelian statue of Huber, a Syrian moon god, on the roof of the Ka'ba, which remained there until the victory of Islam. Of interest is that the Islamic practices Mohammad instituted retain commonalities with earlier heathen ceremonial practices; fetishism is preserved in the kissing of the Black Stone, and the sevenfold circuit of the sanctuary preserves the widespread Arab rite of walking seven times around one's tribal stone in veneration of it.
So, while The Prophet threw down the idols, he shrewdly kept some of the ceremonial trappings as an anchor of familiarity for the people of Mecca, which allows ample latitude for speculation that the crescent moon symbol atop every mosque minaret around the Ka'ba and above every mosque in the world traces back to that moon god statue on the roof. For reasons that should be obvious, modern Islam is silent on these topics, and it is highly unlikely that the area will ever be opened to archaeologists. This leaves only the earliest Muslim writers as authoritative sources with which to compare ritual and practice in other places in the world.

I've also heard that legend, and I have no idea what to think of it, since meteorites have fallen all over the world, visibly and not so, with varying interpretations. That meteorites fall all over the place stands as a great indication that all or even a piece of one isn't all THAT big a deal. Couple that with the fact that veneration of stones was widespread in the Arabian penninsula as far back as 2000B.C. and you get a better picture of what the Black Stone at the Ka'ba really symbolizes; it was just a carry-over into Islam of common pagan stone worship implemented to bait more tribesmen into converting to Islam.
I made the linkage to Jesus' having seen Satan fall from heaven as an off-the-cuff juxtaposition for the sake of conversation, not with the intent to stake a claim that Jesus' words refer to that legend.

"It's gonna take me all night to wade through this one." Um, it may take a little more than all night, but if you're determined to wade through it, here's the beginning.
