Why Saint Patrick's Day?

Saint Patrick's Day has come to be associated with everything Irish: anything green and gold, shamrocks and luck. Most importantly, to those who celebrate its intended meaning, St. Patrick's Day is a traditional day for spiritual renewal and offering prayers for missionaries worldwide.

So, why is it celebrated on March 17th? One theory is that that is the day that St. Patrick died. Since the holiday began in Ireland, it is believed that as the Irish spread out around the world, they took with them their history and celebrations. The biggest observance of all is, of course, in Ireland. With the exception of restaurants and pubs, almost all businesses close on March 17th. Being a religious holiday as well, many Irish attend mass, where March 17th is the traditional day for offering prayers for missionaries worldwide before the serious celebrating begins.

In American cities with a large Irish population, St. Patrick's Day is a very big deal. Big cities and small towns alike celebrate with parades, "wearing of the green," music and songs, Irish food and drink, and activities for kids such as crafts, coloring and games. Some communities even go so far as to dye rivers or streams green!

Oh, yeah. But I had it in the US at a Hungarian festival and it was nothing like in Budapest. Nothing.

I had had enough of that thing not playing. I used a screwdriver. It was all I had at the moment.

Oh, my Lord. You must have watched Tom Cruise's couch-jumping episode on "Oprah" backwards and in Latin.

Pie? My favorite too.

Is you favorite eating it, making it or both?

My favorite pie is fresh black raspberry, but black raspberries are hard to come by.

I make pie. I try not to eat much of it though. I can't afford to gain more weight.

My mother made the best halubki. She is in a rest home now and will never make any more.

I wish you could have tasted hers. I have tasted them made by many people, but her's were the absolute best and not just because she is my mother. That lady could cook. Homemade pies from scratch and everything. Her blackberry pies were never runny like they are when most people try to make them.

Horrors! I'd never waste a perfectly good pie by throwing it at someone.

Not too many people can make a good homemade pie.

Do you make your own crust from scratch and roll out the dough with a rolling pin?

Yes - crust and filling are all made from scratch. My grandmother taught me how to bake when I was 11 or 12. So use a lot of her methods.

Yep. My grandmother made it very well. Never had it better since she passed on. Even when I try to replicate the recipe I still can't get it right.
