Why Saint Patrick's Day?

Saint Patrick's Day has come to be associated with everything Irish: anything green and gold, shamrocks and luck. Most importantly, to those who celebrate its intended meaning, St. Patrick's Day is a traditional day for spiritual renewal and offering prayers for missionaries worldwide.

So, why is it celebrated on March 17th? One theory is that that is the day that St. Patrick died. Since the holiday began in Ireland, it is believed that as the Irish spread out around the world, they took with them their history and celebrations. The biggest observance of all is, of course, in Ireland. With the exception of restaurants and pubs, almost all businesses close on March 17th. Being a religious holiday as well, many Irish attend mass, where March 17th is the traditional day for offering prayers for missionaries worldwide before the serious celebrating begins.

In American cities with a large Irish population, St. Patrick's Day is a very big deal. Big cities and small towns alike celebrate with parades, "wearing of the green," music and songs, Irish food and drink, and activities for kids such as crafts, coloring and games. Some communities even go so far as to dye rivers or streams green!

Maybe we shouldn't set actual dates just yet. Still a bit too early.

In the meantime, I'm off to bed. Sunday morning waits for no man.

I'm rethinking the book. May make it a little more general.

Not sure where they're at. But I gotta get going now.

I started shooting a .44 in 1972. I cast my own bullets out of babbit and lead that were so hard they didn't lead my barrel. I could reload the same brass about 25 times each. Primers were 0.9 cents each. The bullets were practically free. Gunpowder and primers were my only real expense, except for brass once in a while.

I have some arthritis in my hands from the recoil. In the past few years I mostly shoot a .22 SIG trailside pistol for sport. Got about 20,000 through that one. Well, two, actually. Had to send the first one back after 4,000 rounds due to some problems with it and SIG sent me a brand new gun.

Like they said about the terminator: Its what he does. ITS ALL HE DOES. Shooting is about all I do. Outdoors in the good weather and indoors in the bad weather.

But I used to shoot the .44 all the time, three or four times a week for years. Wore out the forcing cone on the gun and now that one spits lead and gunpowder out of the side of the barrel gap. Used to shoot it in competition at gallon jugs at 100 yards, standing up, no leaning against anything, and win. Twenty five shots, had to shoot the jugs in the right order, hit or miss, five at a time, so slop didn't count. Used to win quite frequently against 30 shooters too.

I'm no virgin when it comes to shooting. Been shooting for 50 years, since I was five years old.

Its all in the technique.

That is terrible to hear!

His trip is pretty incredible, and it is amazing the things that people are pushing in the outdoor world. Dean Potter doing El Capitan & Half Dome in 22 hrs, Eric Whittenmyer (sp?) blind climber to summit Everest.... Truly amazing!

That is really impressive! I have only been hunting for 3 years now, and I love it. I really enjoy clay shooting, and I would like to get into pistols too. I do lots of outdoor stuff (some pics on my homepage), as a student though time and money are just too tight.

I know who to go to for all my gun/shooting questions now!
