Clooney Gives Oscar Swag Bag to United Way

LOS ANGELES - Maybe George Clooney feels that taking home an Oscar was enough.

The winner of the Academy Award for best supporting actor for his role in "Syriana" has donated his decadent Oscar gift bag to the United Way, a spokeswoman for the organization said Wednesday.

The loot will be sold in an online auction to benefit the United Way Hurricane Response and Relief Recovery Fund, said spokeswoman Sheila Consaul. Clooney is a member of the charity's board of trustees, she said.

"This refocuses people back to the long-term nature of hurricane recovery efforts," she said.

The gift bag given to presenters at the 78th Annual Academy Awards includes a BlackBerry 8700c, a Kay Unger kimono and a cultured Tahitian-pearl necklace, among other items.

The entire collection will be sold to "one very, very lucky bidder," Consaul said.

The auction will begin March 21 on the United Way Web site.

The winning bidder will also receive a handwritten thank-you note from Clooney acknowledging the donation to hurricane relief, Consaul said.

I DO think clooneeee has become looneeee. Not because he gave his bag to United Way...good for him. However, I really do think he is rebelious to the point now that he has gone over the top and lost it. Seriously. He's got something going on inside.

I can't believe he didn't keep the pearl necklace. That would look lovely on him.

Since old time oscars now show up at auction houses the Academy some years ago instituted a policy of having winners sign declaration forms indicating they will not resell or I think even give away the statues to anyone.

O.K., so this looks like a self-serving public gesture. But what are the rest of them doing with their bags? The bottom line is that he's getting money to hurricane relief. He deserves some credit.

He'll also get a nice little tax deduction :)

He still received the gift, valued at $100,000. He should still owe the taxes. The auction should establish the value of his "gift" to the charity which will determine the basis of his deduciton.

But wouldn't you think (c)looney would be subjected to AMT and not be able to avail himself of such a generous deduction?

You would think so, but I know that Hollywood gets all kinds of tax dodges. That's one of the things the republican congress needs to address. It's become obvious that Hollywood is no longer an asset to this country. Most of those "incentives" were given when Hollywood was exporting a great view of America. Now the situation has changed and I see no reason to continue to give the tax breaks.

BTW we always paid less for swag bags because they were full of seeds and stems.

He is SOOOOOOOO generous and compassionate. Think of that... he gave away his swag bag! Man, what a generous and compassionate person. And he did it publically too. So that nobody might doubt just how generous and compassionate he is. He should run for governor of California. Wow. What a generous and compassionate guy.

Did I mention how generous and compassionate he is?

He traded a bag full of shit that he already has for, maybe, $200,000 worth of non-taxable publicity.

These assholes make me sick.

Where is the RAT/lib/socialist outcry about the mega-rich "movie stars" receiving goodie bags worth $100,000???? Aren't they always crying about the "Rich Republicans" getting favors for this or tax breaks for that, whatever rant they are on.
