Sony's next gen console gets delayed six months
The Japanese newspaper Nihon Keizai Shimbun has reported that Sony will delay the launch of PlayStation 3 until November of 2006. The North American launch date is still up in the air.
According to the report, issues surrounding copy protection for Blu-ray discs is the reason for the delay. If the reports are true (given the source, they probably are), Sony could miss the key holiday rush in the United States. Official word from Sony is expected tomorrow.
Rumors have been circulating about Asustek Computer securing orders for the Sony PlayStation 3 next-generation console and PlayStation Portable (PSP) game console. Both Asustek and Sony have fervently denied the several rumors that Asustek has secured large orders for "mass shipments" by Christmas 2006. It is possible that this could be another sign that the rumored delay is, indeed, true.
Somewhere in Redmond, Bill Gates is grinning from ear to ear.
Video games ping.
I wonder how this will affect sales in Japan assuming that the Revolution will launch there before PS3 and at a much cheaper price and also assumingly catering to a non-traditonal gaming market like their phenomenal success with the DS over there.
I really doubt that last bit about Gates being happy about this. There's a reason why the 360 is being compared to the Dreamcast...
Who cares, I want a Nintendo Revolution.
Darn it, I want my PS3 by Christmas 2006!
Nintendo is aiming for "second console" status. They aren't going to affect PS3 sales in any way: they're just seeking to wedge open the door, rather than blow it open.
Obviously you care if you bothered to read and reply.
The Blu-ray format is looking like it's creating all the problems for the PS3. There were some leaks on how much parts for each PS3 unit costs, and Blu-ray was something like 40% of the entire cost of the unit, and caused the total cost to Sony for each unit to be around $900. Now the Blu-ray format is causing delays.
I wonder if Blu-ray is going to go the way of the Betamax?
The PS2 should continue to do well with the release of such titles as Final Fantasy 12 and Kingdom Hearts later this year.
How many XBOX360s have been sold? I still dont see any in stock at the stores near me.
I heard in December that the next big Xbox 360 push would be in March/April.
What a surprise! Sony once again makes outlandish claims, and underdelivers!
I still say no PS3 until 1Q-07.
By the way--if I sound like a fanboy--I just got a paid blogging gig at Xbox360fanboy.com. Nice way to fund my video game habit. Check it out for all things related to the 360.
I've read some rumors online that movie studios are already starting to jump off the UMD bandwagon, so the PSP may be in for some trouble as well.
i havent had a console since the N64...
I must be really missing out.
That's because they're still suffering from supply shortages.
