How do the local kill them? Raid I used something much more lethal. The HazMat guy gave me a can of something (after I ran to his office gibbering and freaking out) and he said "Don't let this stuff get on your hands and don't go in your room for three hours after you've sprayed it." (Fortunately, this was during the day.)
It was probably some WMD. (Kidding, kidding...)
It killed the spider, though. I found its horrid body on the floor of my shower stall that evening.

how huge is huge? Feet....inches... This one had a body about the size of a drink coaster and its legs were LONG.
They say they're harmless and I'm really not one to freak out over spiders (snakes, YES), but this one was BIG. And IN MY ROOM.

Damn! And a shower friend to boot. I found a scorpion in my tub. I poured a bottle of rubbing alcohol on it (they breath through their skin) which killed it instantly.
Since you're from Texas, who would win a fight, Tarantula in its prime versus Iraqi spider?
