Jimi Hendrix's Purple Haze is claimed to have the most misheard song lyric in rock music.
The song, written at the height of the hippy phenomenon, contains the line "Scuse me while I kiss the sky" - but many think it is actually "Scuse me while I kiss this guy."
Second in a survey from a hearing aid company was the refrain from the Beatles' Paperback Writer which has ended up as "Paint the black whiter".
But there were some less likely transformations.
For example, a line in Madonna's Erotica is supposed to be "Erotic, erotic, put your hands all over my body".
Some people are said to have interpreted this as "Bill Oddie, Bill Oddie, put your hands all over my body."
There is a serious side to the survey, commissioned by David Ormerod Hearing Services.
The company says many people mishear lyrics because they are suffering from "consonant loss", an early sign of hearing loss.
It seems that vowels are easier to pick up - but it is the consonants that dictate the meaning of words.
Or maybe the singers can't or won't enunciate properly and they sing with all sorts of godawful racket going on anyway.
You guys have me laughing my eyes out!
Didn't the "Guess Who" do a song about that? These Eyes?
I thought it was Blinded By The Light.
"After all tha' hooya been through" -- Peter Cetera, Chicago ("Hard to Say I'm Sorry")
Dan
First time I heard it I thought it was "With a purple umbrella and a fist in her hair."
And why don't radio DJs ever break up those two songs?
Why does "Living Loving Maid" always follow "Heartbreaker"?
So they can take an extended butt break?
Yes. "..cry every night for you."
Hmmm. My advice to women, is if a guy comments about your linen, move on.
Fogerty was on Austin City Limits last Saturday. He sung one chorus of Bad Moon very deliberately as "bathroom on the right" and pointed to stage right. He's in on the joke.
I saw Hendrix play twice, 1968 and 1969. Both times he pointed to Noel Redding as he sang the line, "Scuse me, while I kiss this guy"
I always thoguhtit was "wrapped up like a douche, you know I rode her in the night."
Silly, everyone knows they sing, "I ain't talkin' 'bout Bolivia". ;')
Any idea who was in the band? I tried several searches, and found at least three similarly named bands, each of which was not the one. :')
Lou Christie... "Lightning striking again and again and again..."
About twenty years ago I saw him in an oldies show (about five different oldies artists on the bill) and he was still hitting those notes. He couldn't bow though, because of his paunch. ;') Luckily I haven't developed a similar problem. ;') ;')
You're welcome :)
I had a feeling it would be of interest to some FReepers.
Not a chartbuster? Whaaaat?!? Okay, yeah, you're right. :') The band was a one-hit wonder, with a hit that wasn't all that huge. It remains however a really big favorite, and is on my list of quintessential psychedelia (Strawberry Alarm Clock "Incense and Peppermints" is also on that list; the Nazz "Open My Eyes" is also somewhere on there).
"Then, December '68...Hot Smoke was released. I.A., fat and dumb,...had a HIT on their hands. Consider the song scope- Hot Smoke was No. 1 across the globe for two months. This is NO joke, I was there, I saw the numbers. Name a country, any country-No. 1, 8 weeks! Why not number one in America? True tales are best."
