I have never seen it made, but I will tell you there is a huge difference in qualities of vodka. I drink vodka sours with lime, and I used to suffer random headaches after drinking them (within an hour of the first sip). I never knew when I would get one, but when I did I was out. I do not normally suffer headaches (with the exception of seasonal sinus variety). Someone told me to order a "top shelf" brand as opposed to the "bar rail" ie... cheaper version. And since that time I have never had another "vodka" headache.
I am a very occasional drinker, and even then never more then my limit is generally three, but I have noticed a huge difference. I don't know if it is component of the cheap stuff, but I do know there is a difference in quality of vodkas.

They can throw all kinds of nasty and or synthetic crap into something and call it vodka.
I'd be interested actually to see how you fair with Gzhelka as opposed to Crystal or Stoli Gold. Gzhelka is reknowed for its taste but is made using a lot of average quality tricky ingredients that give it a high end flavor and a low-mid end price tag.

Is Russian quality consistent. Get the impression that Russian quality isn't that great.
Similar to Mexico?

There was a show on the History Channel about alcohol and it's manufacture. I remember something about vodka being one of the few alcoholic beverages that is not flavored, just distilled and filtered. Maybe the cheap stuff isn't filtered well.

Vodka headaches are usually from the esters that are filtered out of more expensive brews.
Got a Trader Joes nearby ?
If yes, try their Burnett's vodka ($5.95/ 750ml) - as smooth as the best out there.
