High-end vodka is keeping spirits up

By Nora FitzGerald International Herald Tribune

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 24, 2006

MOSCOW People thought it couldn't be done. The idea of renting Liberty Island in New York Harbor for a bling and borscht party to introduce a Russian vodka seemed too absurd. But Roustam Tariko, 44, a Russian tycoon who made his initial fortune in importing and banking, not only got permission, he also spent more than $3 million, inviting more than 1,000 people to the September event and feeding them Beluga caviar, blinis, quail eggs and, of course, red borscht - all washed down with his red-capped, $35-a-bottle Imperia vodka.

Heard that you can filter the cheaper brands with charcoal and remove the impurities/additives that will cause headaches and affect taste.

There was a show on the History Channel about alcohol and it's manufacture. I remember something about vodka being one of the few alcoholic beverages that is not flavored, just distilled and filtered. Maybe the cheap stuff isn't filtered well.

OK, now I will promise never to order gray goose again. I just googled it, and sure enough right on the beautiful bottle it says France. I have never noticed that before. But then again, I have never bought a bottle for home use either. In fact the only kind I have at home right now it Skyy Vodka. But I just googled them and found out they are from San Francisco, and there charity of choice are AIDS/Gay/Lesbian events (there words not mine), so now I am going to choose something else next time.

Anyone know of any mid to high quality vodkas, that don't promote liberal agendas? HA HA, I hate if when I have too much information.

As far as I KNOW Stolichnaya doesn't. (Stoli.com). Stoli regular is a decent top shelf vodka, Stoli gold is an even better one. (Stoli regular won 2005 best of show in some vodka competition).

Pravda Vodka is a nice Polish vodka many seem to have behind the bar these days:

Chopin is a decent (also Polish) vodka also, I've seen that at a lot of places.

I noticed that Soli Gold and Soli are in the tops also... I can't get past the french flag on the bottom of Grey Goose though... I did drink it before realizing it was french.

Regretfully, even though it is French, Grey Goose is my choice!

Vodka headaches are usually from the esters that are filtered out of more expensive brews.

Got a Trader Joes nearby ?

If yes, try their Burnett's vodka ($5.95/ 750ml) - as smooth as the best out there.

They can throw all kinds of nasty and or synthetic crap into something and call it vodka.

I had some cheap vodka once(plastic bottle)that was horrid.

Most booze gets a literal more tolerable after a few shots but this stuff was like paint thinner.

Worst tasting stuff I think I ever had.

Have you tried the new french vodka Cirac?
It's made from grapes... and it's awesome!

It may have been popov or Crystal palace :))

Seriously the stuff sticks to you're tongue and tastes somewhat like Kerosene smells.

There is a time and place for rum... and it's usually right here in my Mai Tai.

When I went to Hawaii many years ago... with 30 of my closest friends... We had a battle cry....

Mai Tais 'til you die!
We ain't leaving 'til we're heaving!

Gosh, I miss college.

Me too, and for the record. I just wanted a chance to say something with a Russian accent. Put it in front of me, and I'll drink it! LOL! :)
