Time for a new FreeRepublic folding@home thread.

Our FreeRepublic team of 250+ members comprised primarily of Free Republic members in good standing have banded together to donate their excess CPU cycles to a worthy cause. Via distributed computing, millions of computers around the world, contribute directly to scientific research, in the quest for a greater understanding of diseases such as Alzheimer's, Cancer, and Mad Cow (BSE).

Currently, the team is in 188th place (with 940 CPUs - 15,725 completed Work Units and 2,330,000 points)

This is an entirely voluntary program, and if you want to learn more, please see the links posted below (or read one of the previous 8 folding threads)

I wish they had a little more fighting spirit, but they seem to be typical lefties - all bark, no bite. They need somebody else to carry the folding load.

That can't be true... On their thread someone said that we would get bored in a week!

9PM update - 10,961 points

60,463 so far today, with 1 update to go.

Even if we don't reach 70K, we should break our record of 66,461.

My goal is to make the top 10% of folders. Might hit that later this week!

My longterm goal: Beat the great Klutz!

That should happen just about the time monkeys start flying out of my butt...

I downloaded and set up the gui based app last night. My first work unit should be done sometime tomorrow. Perhaps I'll look at the console based version faq to see if there is some way to up the CPU time devoted.

Yeah, it should start staying up there too, but there's going to be a temporary dip as we shift equipment around over the next week or so.

Over the next month, I'll add in another 10 or so. After that, my pickings are down under 2ghz machines, probably not worth bothering.

That's great. Your point total yesterday equals 71 days worth of my production :) I can't imagine what you guys feel. I know I'm really excited every time a 153 pointer WU finishes :)

I wouldn't say that, one of mine is a 1 GHz. It's slower than the 2 GHz, but it can turn out one of the smaller WU (~200 point) every three to four days.

I also have a dual-processor Mac G4 that I'm running two projects on, and I think each processor is 1 GHz. I'm not sure how that compares to a PC folding at 1 GHz (especially when it gets hit with a Tinker--7-10 days sometimes!), but that computer is contributing as well.

They'll be slower, but if you have access to multiple ~1 GHz computers they will make a noticeable contribution.

I'm still not gaining on you, but watch out for abner! He still needs more points per day to catch up to you, but at his current rate he'll pass me in, well, a couple months. But he might pull something out of his sleeve. . .

I wouldn't say that, one of mine is a 1 GHz.

Taken in the larger context, in my particular situation, slow machines don't make sense. The reason is that I have to clean the dust out once a year as it is now. On the ones that fold, I'm going to have to be at it much more frequently so they don't bake themselves.

I've got 38 or so at it now, each one becomes a problem child. If they were all in an air conditioned, reasonably clean server room, I'd have no issues going all in at somewhere north of 120 or so. It's just not practical in my circumstance.

I definately would encourage anyone to put in what you have, it all certainly makes a difference.

Sounds like you need to hire an intern to do all the dusting for you :)

SISD is a school district that blew by us big time, back around the middle to end of December. If I'm not mistaken, they and TSC!Russia are the only two teams that have ever passed us (at least since late November, when I joined).
