Playing With The Cat

My Pretty One is smiling beautifully today
She received a letter from somewhere far away
Whispering about it in hints and clues
As well raised Humans seem destined to do
Her hands doing something just out of sight

She calls my name and I uncurl slowly
Padding close as a Butterfly twists in delight
Drawing me close as she subtly seeks my advice
The Butterfly spinning to tease and entice
Only to bounce away as I prepare to leap

My Pretty One's smile enchants and beguiles
As she purrs about swirling white taffeta gowns
Maids of Honor, ceremonies and promises to keep
With her Mate in the center of a wide Church aisle
As I scratch the Butterfly with a surprising bound

This Game we play is quite near and dear
As I see My Pretty One wipe away a tear
As her future approaches with all its hopes and fears
My paws open and my claws snatch and curl
Hoping there will be more of these chats between just us girls

Jack,
I thought of you tonight as I attended a music rehearsal.

We are singing a piece by Benjamin Britten called "Rejoice in the Lamb." The lyrics were written by a man in an insane asylum in the 18th century and set to music after WW2. The theme is the worship of God, by all created beings and things. One part says:

For I will consider my cat Jeoffry.
For he is the servant of the living God.
Duly and daily serving him.

For at the first glance
Of the glory of God in the East
He worships in his way.
For this is done by wreathing his body
Seven times round with elegant quickness.
For he knows that God is his saviour.
For God has bless'd him
In the variety of his movements.
For there is nothing sweeter
Than his peace when at rest.

For I am possessed of a cat,
Surpassing in beauty,
From whom I take occasion
To bless Almighty God.
