Dell flirts with the Linux desktop
Desktop Linux ^ | Feb. 23, 2006 | Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols

Is Dell is on its way to becoming the first tier-one PC vendor to offer a mainstream business Linux desktop to US customers? It's starting to look that way.

In the recent past, Dell has toyed with shipping a Linux-powered PC to the US market. But, when push came to shove, the results -- a Dimension E510n PC shipped with an empty hard drive, a copy of the obscure, open-source FreeDOS operating system and no support if you did install Linux -- were less then impressive.

It's a different story for so-called workstations priced nearly as cheaply as desktops. Dell has started advertising a trio of affordable workstations with RHEL WS 4 (Red Hat Enterprise Linux workstation 4) preinstalled.

LMAO, hardly, I've been laughing my ass off at you guys from the start. First you post a BS article claiming Dell sells Linux on their desktop computers, which anyone with a brain knew was BS to start with. Then even when the original author retracts the claim, and admits it was BS, you guys were still arguing about it. Funniest of all, now we find out you really didn't even know what a "desktop" computer actually is! Talk about talking out your ass, without a clue. Now all you can do is call people names, how much more pathetic can it get? LOL, when you go crying to the moderator to pull the thread, which is surely next, like you crybabies always do!

"LMAO, hardly, I've been laughing my ass off at you guys from the start. "

It didn't sound like laughter when we caught you lying about your own words and you had to backpedal and ask for a link to what you yourself said, despite the fact that it was right on this thread. That sounded MUCH more like obfuscation and covering your tracks. BTW, I'm not responsible for reminding you what you said, Mr. Senile.

"First you post a BS article claiming Dell sells Linux on their desktop computers, which anyone with a brain knew was BS to start with."

No I didn't. There you go again, getting confused about who did or didn't say what. Of course, I expect as much when you can't remember what you said yourself. Not that this extremely fine point matters, and if it's what you're clinging to to prove...whatever it is you're trying to prove, then you're in real trouble.

"Then even when the original author retracts the claim, and admits it was BS, you guys were still arguing about it."

No I wasn't. Show me where I said Dell sold desktops with Linux on them. I simply pointed out that YOUR original post said "systems" and when you got burned on that, you lied and claimed you never said it to begin with, even going so far as to claim that I made it up. Shamey shamey. BTW, would you consider a workstation a "system"?

"Funniest of all, now we find out you really didn't even know what a "desktop" computer actually is! "

Yes I do. I just asked you to explain to me why I couldn't use a workstation as a desktop. You haven't yet, because you can't.

"Talk about talking out your ass, without a clue."

Okay, lets do! Here's an example: "Those are not my words, those are words you made up..."

"Now all you can do is call people names."

Hey, everybody! Dinner's ready. We're having ROASTED TURKEY with WHINE!!!!

"LOL, when you go crying to the moderator to pull the thread, which is surely next, like you crybabies always do!"

1) I've never requested a thread be pulled in my entire life.

2) That's not even close to a coherent sentence. Of course, you can always deny you wrote it. That's easier than thinking, which you obviously loathe.

BTW, I thought you were leaving like, two days ago? Are you hoping to keep this thread alive long enough to salvage some thread of dignity?

If you are, it's not working.

Linux is gaining some ground. I think I read somewhere that HP is shipping computers to South Africa with Linspire Five-0 pre-installed.

I bought a new Wintergreen desktop 1 1/2 weeks ago. It came with a 2.4GHz Celeron D, 256MB RAM (I just bought 512MB to add to it), a 40GB HDD, a CD-RW, and Linspire Five-0. The modem and sound work out of the box, but the sound card was too quiet for me, so I gutted the Riptide HCF modem from my old 400MHz desktop and added it to the new Wintergreen PC, but since there are now HCF/Riptide drivers compatible with the 2.6 kernels, I have to use Linspire 4.5 (it uses the 2.4.24 kernel).

The new Wintergreen PC set me back only $250, and the RAM I bought today was $50.
