Is Dell is on its way to becoming the first tier-one PC vendor to offer a mainstream business Linux desktop to US customers? It's starting to look that way.
In the recent past, Dell has toyed with shipping a Linux-powered PC to the US market. But, when push came to shove, the results -- a Dimension E510n PC shipped with an empty hard drive, a copy of the obscure, open-source FreeDOS operating system and no support if you did install Linux -- were less then impressive.
It's a different story for so-called workstations priced nearly as cheaply as desktops. Dell has started advertising a trio of affordable workstations with RHEL WS 4 (Red Hat Enterprise Linux workstation 4) preinstalled.
Well, you just have to remember that on a basic level, windowing systems are very similar in form and function, the problem lies in the menus, nomenclature and such. You won't find a Control Panel, but you might find a Control Center. It will take a little exploration and experimentation to get a feel for it. If you were thinking that everything was the same as winders then of course you were disappointed.
But it really isn't that hard; just different.
I just stuck my knoppix disk in that i had from a few months ago into a different computer here on my DSL and that Knoppix live cd cant find any ethernet drivers.
Well, if you want to mess with the command line, you can, and you can actually do a lot of stuff quicker from the command line as opposed to pointing and clicking all over the place. However, the reason for a windowing system is to provide a layer above the commandline, and you can function in Linux without ever opening a terminal window.
As for updates; I'm running SuSE 10.0, and it does have an autoupdate feature, runs down in my "taskbar" and alerts me when updates are available. I have mine set for manual update (I initiate the updates) which just requires me to hit the "Start Update" button.
As for software applications; you download the .RPM package file to a temp directory, right click on it and pick "Actions" and "Install using (in my case) YaST", from the menu. Simple really.
yea well, if i could get linux to connect to the internet then
maybe i would really have something.
ATI is a pain, they are only recently starting to open up to the Linux market, and have started providing drivers and such, but they have some work to do. I have a couple of AIW cards too. nVida is actually more Linux friendly right now. There are other open source projects (GATOS) for the older ATI cards. ATI's web site will point you to them.
How is your DSL modem connected? Directly via USB, or ethernet. Don't you have a hardware router/firewall between your computer and DSL modem? What kind of ethernet card is installed?
You have already admitted you have a wifi card, which is a more difficult situation. You already said you tried it on your laptop and it didn't find the card. Why are you pulling it out again? Do you think the internet spirits will be kinder this time? That sounds like the Homer Simpson approach to networking. You know, I bet if you throw the cd back in your drawer and pull it out three months from now (fanfare and drumroll.....) it STILL won't see and install your card! Zowie! However, there ARE drivers for the card, btw... You want em, I will show you where they are. You sound like a whiner with a point to make, though.
By the way Windows XP on my laptop did NOT see and install drivers for my Linksys (how much more common a card do you need) pcmcia wireless. Mepis, however, did, although I dunno if it would for your laptop/card. However, since it won't run photoshop on that blazing display of color you have there on that thinkpad, what good would it do you? Better to stick with windows, where you can devote half your resources to guard you from drive by downloads and scripts run by Nigerians who have died and left you a fortune. Stick with windows. Everybody uses it and Linux is so HARD and has no apps. Everybody knows that.
Your post was so appallingly stupid that it hurts my head just trying to respond. The essence of it is "there are alot more windows users than Linux, so there are lots more jobs, so there is lots more lit out there..." mixed in with some complaint about how difficult it is to get all 3 of your functioning neurons firing at once to understand something more abstruse than "Hi, it looks like you are typing a letter, would you like some help?"
There, was that better? (hint: the door is thataway)
my DSL modem is connect into a d-link wierless router, then my main system is connected to the wireless router with a ethernet cable, the laptop is wifi., I also have another system that is plugged into the router with an cable
YOu must have odd hardware I have not done A linux install in teh past four years that required any intervention getting on the net..
Epox EP-9NDA3+ with integrated nic.... don't know how wierd that is....
Ridiculous, Dell hasn't standardized on Linux like communist governments have, in fact it appears it's damn near impossible to get desktop computers from them with it preinstalled at all! Your supposed analogy doesn't make any more sense than any of your other posts, seems you aren't capable of anything other than blurting out pathetic denials that lack any sense of reasoning, or launching personal attacks when those denials flop.
And here's the latest on this BS, from the original BS'er himself. Seems he's swallowed his foot, again, and wouldn't you know it, it's all somehow Microsoft's fault. Pathetic, but typical...

"Last Thursday, when I wrote about Dell's new Linux desktop, was one of the most frustrating days of my professional life. My eWEEK colleague John Spooner and I tried our best to get Dell to confess that they really had released an honest-to-God Linux desktop. But Dell simply wouldn't do it."
This is true.
But then a true Photoshop user wouldn't be using Windows anyway.
If you are truly serious about your graphics work, you use a Mac.
If you'll go back and read the posts, you'll be able to take my comment in context.
The poster said that he tried Linux and it had X wrong with it. When the fix for X was pointed out, he moved along to "Yeah, but then there is Y".
For every thing pointed out, he came up with another one.
This has nothing to do with what he prefers, it has to do with rebutting "Bah, Linux 5uX0rz."
If one prefers Windows, fine. But don't bash something if you don't know it.
