The Hobbit Hole XXVIII - Through shadows to the edge of night
http://freeper.the-hobbit-hole.net/ ^

Posted on 02/24/2006 9:52:11 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Through shadows to the edge of night

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

... need to figure out what I'm wearing...

When I'm unsure what I'm wearing and looking down at it doesn't help, I look in the mirror. Usually I recognize it then. I haven't really come home in someone else's clothes since college :~D

Right now I'm wearing pajamas and that won't work. Need more caffeine...

Right... It's too warm for my winter outfits, I don't wear my pretty dress until Easter, and the nice skirt doesn't have a top to go with it right now, so I think I'll have to go with the jean skirt and a top. Hmmm... It's hard, because my Sunday clothes are the only ones I have to think about all week. The rest of the time, as long as I've got a top and jeans, I'm fine.

Becky was upset at me for not getting up early enough to go to the beach today. (We both slept in again until after 10am)

I've consoled her by painting her nails. :-D

I've got bedclothes to wash and movies to return, but other than that - it's another lazy day here. May take her to the park later if she gets restless.

Now, I've gotta figger out what to fix for late breakfast / early lunch. Hmmm....

The Canada geese never left our town! I was expecting them to fly South, as usual, but we had hugh flocks of them in various places all during the Winter.

SirKit saw a chickadee on our deck yesterday. A harbinger of Spring, perhaps?

Clare and I are headed out to the Girl Scout International Festival. Her troop is doing Iceland, and we spent the morning gluing pictures onto the tri-fold board. We were going to do it last night, but the color printer was on the fritz. We thought we'd have to go to Kinko's this morning a pay for a bunch of color copies, but the printer started working again, so we were able to get er done!

Whew! Just in the nick of time. :-D

Change of plans here...

We're going to the theatre to catch Aquamarine. It's a mermaid movie that Becky wants to see.

We're getting ready now, so I'd better log off and get moving!

It's a gorgeous day. I can't decide whether to bike or go to the park or walk... so I think I'll bike to a park and throw a frisbee around. Mmm...

Around here, lately, chickadees are winter birds. We used to have them all year around, but for the last two years, they only appear in winter.

Slate-colored juncoes are also winter birds here, although summer and winter ranges overlap in Michigan. But they've always been ground-feeders, scratching in the dirt like tiny chickens. This year, they have taken to perching on the thistle feeder, too. I've never seen a mass behavioral change in birds like this before.

The hawks keep the mourning dove population down, and keep the pigeons scared away from the feeders.

We didn't have a bird feeder this winter, so we didn't have as many birds this year. I always see the juncos in winter; I call them monk birds because they look like monks wearing their cowls. I'd never noticed the chickadees in winter.

The cardinals are really starting to get their color; saw a blue jay at our feeder, plenty of doves and our sparrows are still ganging the feeder. Hawks pick off the odd dove but a dozen or so hang around all year.

Gypsygirl got a loooong walk this afternoon, the weather was beautiful for it. Walked almost to the end of theshire, she's been napping peacefully since we got back. She'll wake up momentarily since it's nearly her dinner time. Whoops, she heard me type 'dinner'.

It was 65 and sunny here. I biked for over an hour, stopped at a little empty park by a pond and sat and looked at the mountains, went and played some frisbee golf... mmm...

FWIW, I'm boycotting the "boycott the Oscars" threads...

Whatever happened to "I'm just not going to watch?"
