Another pretty straight forward poll. I choose remaining an American possession. There are good arguments for the other choices, also.

I say that we limit our own hurricane liabilities. Plus they won't let our navy train there anymore either.
To: Chickensoup
Let them buy their independence. 50% of book value.

Then to heck with them, remain possessions!

Excellent question. 51st state would probably cost the most.

making it a state. Currently, they gain all the benefits of US citizens, and pay 0 to the US in return.

I read somewhere (wish I knew where) that a large percentage of the people there are on welfare of some sort. Also, a big aids problem.

uertoP Rico becomes a state = 2 liberal Senators buying votes from the poor being paid for with our tax dollars
To: dynachrome
Make them a state...Get some tax money out of them.
If they don't like it then transform it into an Island holding pen for terrorists and Illegal Aliens.

You're kidding right? This is a joke?
I'm sure most Puerto Ricans want their independence...till they see what it's going to cost them.

"8 electoral votes" Well, I for one, would do a lot of campaigning on the beaches for that many electoral votes.

Independence sounds good to me.
What does it do for US??
I can't think of a thing.
To: Chickensoup
Puerto Rican independence will cost you far less in taxes than either of the other options.
I spent some time on Vieques a few years ago and found that many of the locals were on welfare or worked at Roosevelt Roads. The local communist groups can't wait for the Viequenses to be absolutely poverty stricken. (It's hard to preach class warfare to the comfortable.)
I understand that life on the big island isn't much better, except the tourist dollars that enter (and stay) in San Juan.
