Vanity/help with computer :(

To anyone with a modicum of computer expertise :) I have been having a problem with my computer. It has been crashing a lot lately, and goes to a blue screen with the standard issue less-than-helpful blah blah. What I can tell you is that it says "MACHINE CHECK EXCEPTION" and follows with more gobblety-gook (yes, I know - not the most scientific of descriptions) then gives the STOP and specific system address of the exception. I can get more specific if anyone has an idea on how to correct this. THANX!!

Buy a new one quick before your hard drive craps out- or at least back up all your important suff somewhere...

The blue screen of death is coming to get you!

give us the numbers and such from the BSOD, we will be able to help better. Does it get to windows? Have you tried booting into Safe mode?

You either have a virus or a hardware problem.

Are you well-protected by a good anti-virus? If so, run a system scan.

You also mught try defragmenting your hard drives (you should be able to find it pretty easily).

If you do all that you keep getting the error, time to invest in a new computer -- saw a brand new Dell for sale the other day for $299.

I assume your computer is using a version of Windows. We need to know what version (XP, 98, 2000, etc).

The error message begins as in my original post with the following information:
STOP: 0x0000009C (0x00000004, 0x80545FF0, 0xB2000000, 0x00070F0F) Beginning dump of physical memory
The computer is an HP Pavilion zv5000 laptop with an AMD XP-M processor using Windows XP

Unfortunately with this type of error it could be anything, your best bet might be reading forums through google to see which case fits yours. If you can open the computer and check to make sure everything is in correctly, i.e. ram is seated right, all cables are secure, all fans are running. If you have more ram you can try rotating some out to see if that is causing the problems. Some of the sites i saw suggest a bad Powersupply as well. Sorry i can not be more help.

1. Run your web browser "off line', deleate all cookies and historys. Before you do, write down any passwords/codes if you won't be able to rember them. In IE it is in "tools' then n 'internet options"
2.. Defrag hard drive.
3.. Run disk clean up. Both are at 'programs
' then 'accessories' then 'system tools'
4. Down load free personal Lavasoft Ad-Aware SE Personal, and run.
5. Go to HP website, and they have programs that will check you specific laptop and see if there are any new drivers, software issues.
6. Microsoft has the same thing, where online they will go through you laptop, checking your MS products and especially updateing security patches.

Those are all good suggestions but i do not this it will fix this problem, WinXP does not BSOD's much and in this case seems more hardware related.

I don't think this is a windows-generated "blue screen of death."

I think this is a hardware fault. Sometimes it can be caused by a failing motherboard, especially a failing CPU fan. The processor is overheating and becoming confused, frankly.

Or it could be a fried motherboard that is about to die.


Sorry, but I've been there, done that. I'd be looking for a new one if I was you.

I'd try to get warranty replacement/repair, or see if the problem repeats when the computer has been off long enough to cool.

Were you trying to play a DVD?

Here's somebody with a similar problem:

i can't get a dvd to play. when i put one in, i can hear it turning. but, after about 20 seconds, the computer freezes and i am locked out of my mouse and keyboard. i have tried to use pc doctor, but once a put a dvd or cd in, the computer locks up. twice, i received a blue screen that stated there was a machine check exception and stop: 0x0000009c (0x00000004, 0x80545ff0, 0xb2000000, 0x00070f0f). i've tried to reinstall the driver and it states i have the most up to date driver. i can still burn cds in this drive and my other cd rom drive works fine. i did have adware on my computer and it's now gone. could this be related. i'm unsure when the dvd player started doing this because i don't use it that often. i've researched the hp and microsoft sites without success.

my computer is a hp pavilion a736n with an amd athlon 64 processor

This is a hardware issue: an unrecoverable hardware error has occurred. The parameters have different meanings depending on what type of CPU you have but, while diagnostic, rarely lead to a clear solution. Most commonly it results from overheating, from failed hardware (RAM, CPU, hardware bus, power supply, etc.), or from pushing hardware beyond its capabilities (e.g., overclocking a CPU).

On second thought...after reading the MS KB article...your CPU is likely ok. Most likely cause could be a RAM problem. Good info in that MS link. Check it out.

I think you have hit upon the most likely scenario; the error occurs after it has been operating for awhile, and not during any specific operation. I think it is the case fan; if so, I think I can repair it myself (IF I can find someone who sells a case fan that will fit, that is if you think it is something that is non-terminal).
