Welcome to the new FreeRepublic folding@home thread. The previous thread has gotten too large, so we move on to yet another.

While this folding@home team is not officially sanctioned by Free Republic, it's 250+ members comprised primarily of Free Republic members in good standing have banded together to donate their excess CPU cycles to a worthy cause. Via distributed computing, millions of computers around the world, contribute directly to scientific research, in the quest for a greater understanding of diseases such as Alzheimer's, Cancer, and Mad Cow (BSE).

Currently, the team is in 241st place, having moved up from 1200th place, a week earlier, and is now in the top 100 teams, for daily contributions.

This is an entirely voluntary program, and if you want to learn more, please see the links posted below (or read one of the previous 8 folding threads)

Qo'nos has grabbed itself a tinker. Those are some weirdly constructed software puzzles, and are the strangest of the three types of workunits currently available.

As long as it's reporting frames completed, let it's weirdness reside in peace, and be content, that thine computer, is verily folding.

If it chokes on you, hold up a picture of a mac. It'll straighten up :)

Sorry... Klutz screwed up this week, and when they were talking about electrical upgrades to the circuits, he didn't envision that meant they were going to turn the juice off THE ENTIRE WEEKEND... *aargh*

Next weekend, I'll have plan 23x(r)3.2~y in effect. I have no clue what that entails, but step 3 clearly states, consume mass quantities of fermented yeast, hops, and barley, and keep fingers crossed.

Question for anyone who knows:

What can I do about Firefox crashing while I'm using F@H? I'd love to run it fulltime, but not at the cost of my browser.

???? Well, I probably can't help much cause I have Firefox and F@H running happily together on two machines with no issues... other than F@H not liking Battlefield II.
Does Fire fox randomly crash? Do certain web pages make it crash? Need more details.

Step 3 - is that a requirement for all team members, or can I have a special dispensation to change the recipe to fermented grapes instead of fermented grains? (I'm borg-lite, 'ya know)

It only crashes when I have F@H running.

Rarely I can get it to start after I start F@H, more often I just get an immediate crash. My start page is FR. If FF is already going and I start F@H, it crashes within a few minutes at most. It seems like the simpler the page, the less chance of a crash.

I'd love to get this tracked down and fixed so I could keep F@H going fulltime, instead of just when I'm not using Firefox.

I have two processors--one Mac, one PC. The Mac is shiny and new, with a 1.x ghz processor. I thought it would be out-pacing my really old 533 mhz PC. But, no--they both have 400-frame Tinker units, and the PC processes Tinker in about 75% of the time it take the Mac to do a Tinker. Frustrating.

Interesting: My PC is doing Tinker P1152 for the 5th time. Why?

"It only crashes when I have F@H running. "

Humm...odd. That's the first I've heard of that problem. I use Firefox too with no problems. Only time I shut down FAH is when I play a demanding game like CoD2 or some Steam game(H/L,Counter Stike, DoD). I happen to use the console FAH. How about seeing if switching FAH version helps? If using GUI switch to console or vise versa.

I read yesterday on the F@H forum that G3's and G4's run Tinkers at the speed of mud. I also have a G4 running a Tinker at 14% complete at 24 hours. Additionally, it's a dual processor so apparently F@H can only work one processor at a time, further cutting down on productivity. I was hoping to boost my output with this computer, but I guess not!

G5's apparently shouldn't have this problem. What's your computer?

I have noticed the same thing on my 3 PCs; they all seem to work on the same group of projects, but not the same groups.

I suspect that when a finished work unit is uploaded to a server, it is very likely that the next work unit will be assigned from the same server.

It's a G4 iBook. I read about G4s and Tinker cores. I went to a Folding site that recommended inCrease, a little program especially for Macs that keeps F@H running even if you're logged out, plus some other options. It's also intended to help G4s avoid Tinker units through settings. In this regard, all I can say is that it didn't work the first time. I think, though, that most of the WUs available are Tinker core, so it can't be helped. Even so, having inCrease for my F@H interface is very nice. I recommend it to everyone.

Same thing with Dungeon Siege II. If I leave it running, it minimizes every time I do something involving opening a new pane (looking at the map, opening the inventory. . .) If I pause it, it minimizes after running movies. Exiting solved the problem.

I bet the CLI version would be no problem, but I like being able to watch my protein fold.

I have a Radeon 9600SE. What's your video card?

Thanks for the insight!

Qo'nos is a slower machine, running WinME. It actually only recently finished it's first WU since starting on the 23rd of January. Several misstarts, a couple of power-outages and it would "recover" by restarting the project from scratch.

With this new project, it seems to be working fine. I noticed, however, that over the last couple of days while it was operating, my "completed" WU count on the team page went from 60+ to 187!

After shutting down Qo'nos overnight... and accounting for lag... I'm holding steady at 217 WUs "completed". It appears that Qo'nos was somehow responsible for all these extra WUs.

While it's running, the percentage complete keeps going up, and I'm willing to allow it to keep running-- I just don't want to adversely affect anything at Stanford, or skew our results in any fashion.

I'll restart it and see what happens...

Unknown. It's a Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop. I'd have to look at the specs.

It's not a huge problem, now that I'm aware of it. Plus I don't have a chance to play many games anyway.

Woo-Hoo! Finally passed 10,000 points! Still stuck firmly around #30 in rank, but holding steady and folding away. A couple of my CPUs have been stuck with slow tinkers, and that's really killing my point production speed, but oh well - Tinker's a protein too...
Somebody's got to fold 'em!
