A combat patch is awarded to combat units after a certain period in the field. It isn't their regular unit insignia.

"A combat patch is awarded to combat units after a certain period in the field. It isn't their regular unit insignia." It is the same. It is worn on the right shoulder as a combat patch, and the soldier who earns one is entitled to wear it throughout his/her career. The soldier wears the patch of their current unit of assignment on their left shoulder.

The Fourth ID patch has a long history that goes all the way back to the time the Army issued the first four compasses to new lieutenants....;-)

There must be a story there. Can you link it or post it?

That's just a lieutenant joke...
The patch is actually a visual pun. At one time Divisions were referred to with Roman Numerals so the 4th ID was the IV Division ("Ivy"). There's a little more than that, but that's the basis of the real origins of the patch.

Don't have one readily at hand but I got the implied METL loud and clear "Go Find ONE and it better be the Right One."
