The ***OFFICIAL*** Friday/Saturday Night Singles' Thread

Pitch hitting for Scott tonight and Ok, ok I know, it early but what the heck!

The History of Valentine's Day

Every February, across the country, candy, flowers, and gifts are exchanged between loved ones, all in the name of St. Valentine. But who is this mysterious saint and why do we celebrate this holiday? The history of Valentine's Day -- and its patron saint -- is shrouded in mystery. But we do know that February has long been a month of romance. St. Valentine's Day, as we know it today, contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. So, who was Saint Valentine and how did he become associated with this ancient rite?

Today, the Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred. One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men -- his crop of potential soldiers. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine's actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death.

Other stories suggest that Valentine may have been killed for attempting to help Christians escape harsh Roman prisons where they were often beaten and tortured

According to one legend, Valentine actually sent the first 'valentine' greeting himself. While in prison, it is believed that Valentine fell in love with a young girl -- who may have been his jailor's daughter -- who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter, which he signed 'From your Valentine,' an expression that is still in use today.

Although the truth behind the Valentine legends is murky, the stories certainly emphasize his appeal as a sympathetic, heroic, and, most importantly, romantic figure. It's no surprise that by the Middle Ages, Valentine was one of the most popular saints in England and France.

Did You Know?

- 192 million Valentine’s Day cards are exchanged annually, making Valentine’s Day the second-most popular greeting-card-giving occasion. (This total excludes packaged kids valentines for classroom exchanges.) (Source: Hallmark research)

- Nearly 60 percent of all Valentine’s Day cards are purchased in the six days prior to the observance, making Valentine’s Day a procrastinator’s delight. (Source: Hallmark research)

- There are 120 single men (i.e., never married, widowed or divorced) who are in their 20s for every 100 single women of the same ages.

- There are 33 single men (i.e., never married, widowed or divorced) age 65 or older for every 100 single women of the same ages.

2.2 million marriages take place in the United States annually.
That breaks down to more than 6,000 a day.

- 145,800 marriages are performed in Nevada during 2004.
So many couples “tie the knot” in the Silver State that it ranked fourth nationally in marriages, even though its total population that year among states was 35th.

But how ya gonna keep ‘em down on the farm after they’ve seen Paree?

Just came in from a beautiful(?) day here, about 25o out but no snow yet.

Never had any chance of being a liberal,my father so detested FDR that he would`nt pronounce his name correctly, saying it so it sounded like Ruze-uh-velt.
Politics was the one thing that I never disagreed with him on.

I have since learned he was right on most of the other stuff too.

We've had a nice week of weather in the 60-70s range, but next week we're supposed to get what passes for "cold" here, not what you would say was cold, anyway!

As a little kid, I do vaguely remember my mom wearng an "I Like Ike" button on her posterior and going to a neighborhood event. I also remember them saying they were voting for Kennedy. Never got the chance to ask them what happened, and I should have, but they voted Republican ever since.

I was among the 18-year-olds that got to vote in 1972, and I was very excited about it. I voted for Nixon, but just to get my dad riled up, and because I was somewhat of a rebellious teen, I told him I had voted for McGovern. Wow, was he ever mad, saying he thought he'd raised me to be a sensible young woman, etc. I 'fessed up eventually and we laughed about it later.

I can't imagine ever, ever voting for a democrat for president, especially not in this particular time. Not to say there aren't "good" dems, I just don't see their party putting anybody up that I would agree with on anything.

1972 is the year I became politically aware,my first memories being the assassination attempt on George Wallace, the talk on the news about Shirley Chisholm running for President.
I was seven at the time so I missed a lot, only remembering that the day after the election hearing Nixon had won.
Than Watergate and my father was fit to be tied,I think he would have been a FReeper if such a thing had existed at that time.

My first vote in a Presidential election was for Reagan in 1984 and am proud to be able to say to all the young uns that I was able to vote for him.

Where do the years fall away to?

"Where do the years fall away to?" Man, they fly by like a jet plane, especially after you graduate from high school.

I consider President Reagan to be the greatest president of my lifetme, and I am always proud to say I got to vote for him, too. He was a great man.

My lib friends all knew this, and I was very pleasantly surprised to accept their condolences to me on his passing, w/o any sarcasm or potshots whatsoever.

How's the snodog coming along? Has he had a chance to pull a sled yet? If so, did he look happy or have a sad puppy face.
