Have you thought of contacting a dental school and seeing if you can get him in as a 'test' subject. Oh maybe one of your Dr.s can recommend 'oral surgery' that may be covered by insurance. I'm sure there is some way you can help him get his teeth worked on....
Seriously, his health and nutritional status are being compromised by his teeth. And like you said, his self-esteem is suffering too. I'll be thinking of you hun.

I'm either working with nursing home patients, tube feeders, those in really bad nutritional shape and losts of the homeless MI/D&A types.
It sure does put things in perspective. If they don't have bad labs, wounds or are 30% underweight, I'm having a good day. If they can feed themselves, chew, swallow and don't see green bugs in their food (or worse, talking to them), I'm having a GREAT day!
najida, my grandmother is 103...I don't feel compelled to see her much anymore because she doesn't know me now. She's outlived her money - which was considerable some time ago, looks like a wild woman now when she was so dignified even at age 90. It is very sad. My father, her son, has taken this on the chin. It's been very hard on him.

When you crack open a chart on some poor, pitiful soul and read that they are only 7 years, 5 years, 1 day older than you! Believe me, your Mama was right! Drink in moderation, eat your veges, get plenty of sleep and take your medications!
As for your Granny, my attitude has always been that it's no longer about her, it's about those around her. How she's treated by them is what is to be judged, not her, how she looks or her behaviors.
Such as it's been since the dawn of time. Societies are judged by how they treat the most helpless. And to me, folks like your Granny are at the greatest risk because they scare people by being a window into their possible future. So, often in the name of compassion, or discomfort or whatever, they are neglected.

We've got the best nursing home in Atlanta - and it is dismal at best. Her jewelry stolen (we didn't know), her clothes missing (we didn't know). She's been reduced from a dignified woman to ... to... .
Well, najida, at least she doesn't know.
BUT, some of the things that go on in there are hysterical! Purely hysterical. YOu gotta have a sense of humor when you sit around with these folks.
