I still don't know the origin of 'faggot'. The only other reference is a bundle of sticks. How it got to it's current meaning I don't know.
I do know the background of gibrone, also pronounced jay-brone, or gibronie. One of my favorite descriptive terms.

AFAIK, "fag" comes from English "public" school usage. Public meaning private schools, of course. The boys' boarding schools - "fags" were younger classmen who were expected to serve the whims of the older classmen, which service sometimes including sodomy. C.S. Lewis mentions it in "Suprised by Joy" and I've read it elsewhere as well.
