On the contrary.
The word has been co-opted, permanently.
So when you now here that such-and-such is "gay", it's properly used in an ironic and perjorative sense.
"Gays" will soon need to steal yet another label, because the word "gay" as used in popular culture is just as perjorative as "queer", "faggot", "fem", or "queen".

Yep. They've HIJACKED a perfectly good word to apply to their perversion.
And there's NOTHING "GAY" about contracting AIDS and dying a horrible death at an average age of 42 or so as was the case with my wife's barbershop chorus director. Very talented, very queer -- and now very DEAD -- guy.
