THE NEW CARS GET ROLLING:

The New Cars featuring Todd Rundgren have performed their first gig, rehearsing in California. The TR Connection website lists the set list as follows:

Just What I Needed . Let's Go . You're All I Got Tonight . You Might Think . Best Friends Girl . I Saw The Light . Candy-O . Not Tonight . Drive . Moving in Stereo . Shake It Up . Dangerous Type . Bye Bye Love . Encore: Open My Eyes . Good Times Roll.

The first new song from the guys is the rather good sounding Not Tonight.

Just in case any Cars fans here have not heard, the Cars have reunited without Ric Ocassek (if you can believe it). If Occasek were involved I could enjoy the show even though Ben Orr (bass player and singer) passed away back in 2000. However, the only original members here are Elliot Easton and Greg Hawkes. These two are very much a part of the Cars' sound, but Occasek was the main writer and "image" of the band. Rungren is really doing his best to imitate Occasek in the song that is posted on the www.Melodicrock.com web site.

I think it is a money grab, pure and simple. Any other people here agree / disagree?

Rungren is a good musician in his own right. So, I would give it a shot.

I'm a huge fan of Todd Rundgren, and I really like The Cars, but this just doesn't sound that good. Rundgren has a genius for songwriting, but he has just plain terrible judgement.

And by the way, I'm a Capitalist and am therefore all for a money grab. If they can get it, go for it.

I dunno. Ric Ocasek was a nasty piece of goods, but he was an original. Dunno if he could truly be replaced.

No, it just wouldn't be the same. Didn't know that about Ben Orr. Bummer.

Agree.

Without the essense of Ric Ocasek, the 'Cars' is counterfeit. Bad enough Ben Orr isn't around.

Funny. I was just sittin here wondering if the band I'm listening to would ever get back together.

No, not the Cars. Talking Heads.

No doubt Byrne has got Ocasek out weirded!

Wow...I once posited that The Cars was a band every single person, regardless of their music taste, liked. Even my late father, he of the Bob Wills/Polka/Johnny Cash persuasion was quoted as saying The Cars are "ok".

I'm a Capitalist as well. I guess I tend to be a bit of a purest when it comes to bands reuniting after a lengthy absence. Ocasek was too important a figure in the band for me. I don't blame the other two for wanting to make some money and wanting to play - musicians want to play music and they want to play to decent-sized crowds. This just doesn't sit well with me for some reason.

I also can't help but believe that Rundgren was chosen for his looks. He can be made to look like Ocasek for casual fans, of which there are many. I'll be interested if he goes on stage wearing sunglasses like Ocasek did. You'd be amazed at how many people who attend these "reunion" type shoes have no knowledge of who is in the band. In many cases, the band hopes for this. That is one of the things I don't like.

Rundgren knows how to get a C-flat bass guitar climbing all over the what remains of the song. I want some funny songs coming out of this.
