I am Ready to Leave the USA. Any Suggestions of Where to Live? [DU]

Posted on 01/25/2006 8:43:28 PM PST by DancesWithBolsheviks

DU Thread - I would love to go to Canada but it seems we may be too old by the time we are able to leave in about two years. I am also considering Costa Rica, Panama and Mexico but any civilized non-fascist country will do. Please, any suggestions, help and/or links are greatly appreciated.

I am hoping for no "stay and fight" or "coward" responses. I have two young boys who deserve to have a real future. That is not going to happen in this country.

You aren't thinking of invading the argentine republic are you? The antarctic peninsula is theirs, just like the malvinas (falklands).

FYI...Freeper "Dead" is the creator of that hilarious Photoshop...I think it is the funniest thing I have seen since...well...Galloway acted like a cat. No...that actually WASN'T funny, it was creepy...

Anyway, Dead is the author!

Greece is a wonderful country to live in, but you better be able to pay out-of-pocket, up-front, for private medical care, or your first medical emergency is likely to be your last.

And it has a dreadful public school system, to keep in mind for someone with kids. Oh, and there's the language issue to - harder for an English speaker to learn than Gaelic.

What's a forlorn DUer to do??

Actually, I have heard that an American with money can have a pretty good life in Cuba.

A business friend of mine married a Cuba, babe. They will be retiring in three years on a 2 acre estate in Cuba. Personally, I think I'll stay here in NC.

I agree. I'm part Greek, so I'd definitely consider it. I don't think they need anymore American liberals moving in, though. They have enough troubles.

I forgot to mention, electricity frequently goes out for hours at a time and hot water is a cherished luxury. Ditto for clean, refrigerated food. Viva la revolucion!

I just have to laugh every time the DUmpsterites threaten to leave the USA when they lose. It's so pathetic. Especially when they claim it's for their children.

Me too. The amount of fear & paranoia on that DU thread is too much.

Up inside Ted Kennedy's anal passage is always nice and warm this time of year. . .a little cramped with all the MSM up in there, but otherwise a nice and toasty place to spend the cold winter months.

Europe..pick a country.

Luzern Switzerland is not a bad choice. Or Interlochen, Switzerland. I worked in the neighborhood for several months. Best to review your German, French, and Italian if you head south.

Panama was nice when noriega was in power but before the sanctions as well, though the police had a lot more power to harrass then. Assuming the US had never placed sanctions on panama in 87(?) or indicted noriega, Panama the country would still be a nice place to be, though local politics would be a bit different, and civil rights would be considerably more limited...

the US in good part created the noriega "problem" from an international viewpoint, hurt the country badly with banking sanctions (panama uses the dollar), and refused to go pick noriega up in 0ct 89 when he was arrested in a brief coup that fell apart after the US failed to respond to a request to retrieve the captive general.

my main fear remains tha the gangs that are prevalent in el salvador, honduras, guatemala begin to appear in panama. kleptocracy is par for the course, and it beats orwellocracy if you are not tied to the country.

LOL! These people are worried about living down south. I thought money to them was evil? I can see it now..."I left the United States because it is a horrible place to live, Si?"...Then watch the Mexicans, Central or South Americans snicker and roll their eyes.

:) I partuclarly loved the DU poster who pointed out that, given all the great praise for Chavez on other threads, he was surprized to see no mention of Venezuela as a destination. As of now there were still no takers in extolling th virtues of Chavez's benevolent revolution (see my tag line)
