Brokeback Mountain Claims Big Four At The Golden Globes

Critically-acclaimed western Brokeback Mountain cleaned up at the Golden Globe Awards last night by claiming four top honors.

The controversial film, which has been banned from some cinemas for its gay themes, took home Best Movie (Drama), Best Screenplay and Best Song prizes at the 63rd annual Golden Globe Awards, while Ang Lee picked up the night's Best Director honor from his hero Clint Eastwood.

And there were triple celebrations for Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line when Reese Witherspoon and Joaquin Phoenix claimed the acting honors in the Comedy/Musical movie category and the film picked up the Best Motion Picture (Comedy/Musical) prize.

The win cost Phoenix dear, however - he bet Witherspoon's husband Ryan Phillippe he wouldn't win a Golden Globe. The Crash star demanded payment as his pal took to the stage at the Beverly Hilton hotel.

Meanwhile, there was a big upset for the stars of Desperate Housewives during the night's TV awards - all four Best Actress nominees from the show lost out to Mary Louise Parker, who plays a marijuana-selling desperate housewife on cable show Weeds.

But the stars of the hit show didn't miss out on a Best TV Show award - they scooped the coveted prize from Weeds, Curb Your Enthusiasm, My Name is Earl, Entourage and Everybody Hates Chris - and the show's Felicity Huffman claimed the night's Best Actress (Drama) movie award for her role as a transgender man in Transamerica.

The big TV winner was acclaimed mini-series Empire Falls, which claimed two honors - Best Actor (Paul Neuman) and Best Miniseries/TV Movie.

The full list of awards is:

Movie Awards Best Score: John Williams MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA

Best Original Song: A Love that Will Never Grow Old by Emmylou Harris, Bernie Taupin and Gustavo Santaolalla -Brokeback Mountain

Best Movie (Comedy/Musical): Walk the Line

Best Movie (Drama):

TV Awards

Best Mini-series or TV Movie: Empire Falls

Best TV Series (Movie/Comedy): Desperate Housewives

Best TV Series (Drama): Lost

Cecil B Demille Award for Lifetime Achievement: Sir Anthony Hopkins

I can't wait to see the ratings for this waste of air time. I'm sure 24 plummeted them and even during their last hour they were up against The Bachelor.
The Golden Globes was the most-watched program last night, both in numbers of households and among adults 18-49. The first hour of 24 tied for fourth in households and third among adults 18-49. The second hour improved to a tie for second in households and a tie for first among adults 18-49. The Bachelor was ninth in households and eighth among adults 18-49.

No, it is moral-equivalence. The original book was solidly anti-terror. There is another posting on this forum regarding how the author of the book is disgusted by the moral-equivalence presented between the terrorists and the Mossad. The original author wishes a movie vaguely close to his book was produced.

From Defamer.com...
http://www.defamer.com/hollywood/golden-globes/more-globe-moments-dennis-quaids-chick-flick-joke-149122.php

Anyone who sat through last night’s Golden Globes telecast felt crippling, vicarious embarrassment on behalf of presenter Dennis Quaid, whose soon-to-be infamous “chick flick” joke will surely go down in the storied history of awards show misfires. Our transcription of Quaid’s doomed introduction of Brokeback Mountain:

QUAID: “Our last nominated drama tells the story of two young cowboys who met in the summer if 1963 and forge an unexpected, lifelong connection that proves the endurance and power of love. It’s a controversial film. It’s…let’s just say it rhymes with ‘chick flick.’”

[SFX: CRICKETS too confused to muster much chirping.]

[SFX: Barely audible, grudging LAUGHTER.]

CUT TO: Heath Ledger REACTS with a sliver of a smile, wishing he could swallow down his shame like his Brokeback character, Ennis Del Mar.

Always a pro, Quaid took the stifling silence in stride and continued his recitation of Teleprompter copy. But the damage had been done, as millions of people around the world were bumped out of the moment, finding themselves wondering what pronunciation of “an uplifting, emotional tour de force about the incredible, but sometimes tragic, power of love” can be made to rhyme with “chick flick.”

Without giving away the story...it is, quite briefly, about extraordiary forgiveness.

Feel free to go to the documentary site (which will give you a synopsis of the story in about 45 seconds) and get a brief overview of the story. Click here

Is anyone surprised that a bunch of Hollyweird phonies would pick a movie about homosexuals to give awards to?

No, I didn't think so. This is just more of the same from the egotistical liberals on the left coast.

I don't know if the film is any good - Bendover Mountain. Its simply that Hollywood slathered the awards on it because it is a GAY flick and nothing more. It was done to piss the rest of Americans off. It was done in an effort to say "Screw the traditional Family, religion, and heterosexuality". In Hollywood the kinkier the better.

Bump and ping.

A friend of mine went to see this movie. And from what she said last night... what she saw on TV and heard on the radio, it seemed to be a good movie so she took her 16-year-old daughter. She had no idea what she was in for, so they walked out within 20 minutes and was given a refund.

As I understand on top of that they aren't cowboys, they are sheepmen."""

Yes, I heard about that - - these two "guys" prefer sheep to cows. Well, that's their orientation, I guess.

"Gay Movies" will be pitted against Religious conservative leaders tonight on Larry King Live, 9p Eastern. Brokeback will be featured along with END OF THE SPEAR which is about missionaries, comes out Friday, and has an actor who is gay. Heard it's (End of the Spear) an oustanding movie and that the actor did an incredible job. MUCH different than Brokeback Mountain.

Hollywood would have lauded Mel Gibson with awards if he had introduced two gay cowboys in his Passion of Christ movie. That's all it takes for those freaks in Hollywood to vote it a great film.

I hear in the sequel, they screw the sheep too....it's sure to win every possible award while being a gigantic box office bust.

Does the sight of conservatives fighting to protect moral values embarass you ? Do you find it 'intolerant' and 'insensitive' ? Should we be more 'inclusive' ?

If we do not fight back we live in a world where Hollywood homos dictate moral values to the culture at large. If that happens it doesn't matter how many Republicans there are in Congress. If the Left wins the cultural victories than all our political victories are for naught.
