Poodle Is Manhattan's Most Popular Dog Breed
AP ^ | January 11, 2006

The poodle pranced to the top of the list of Manhattan's most popular dog breeds in 2005.

The poodle edged out the Labrador retriever and dachshund, the American Kennel Club said Tuesday.

Manhattan's standard, miniature and toy poodles snatched No. 1 from the borough's dachshunds, which slid to third from 2004's top spot. The Labrador retriever was ranked No. 2, according to the kennel club, which based the rankings on its national registration statistics broken down by ZIP code.

Next in popularity were the Yorkshire terrier, golden retriever, bulldog, French bulldog, Shih Tzu and Havanese. The 10th spot was shared by the Maltese and the pug.

New to the list for 2005 were the French bulldog and the Havanese, the kennel club said.

"These breeds appeal to sophisticated people who, while they may not have a lot of space in their Manhattan apartment, have plenty of love for a petite canine companion," kennel club spokeswoman Gail Miller said in a news release announcing the rankings.

The American Kennel Club, which was established in 1884, says it aims to advance the study, breeding and exhibition of purebred dogs.

We have a schnoodle...schnauzer/poodle mix. Great dog...smart, loyal, fearless, patient with the kids, and best of all, doesn't shed!

Border collies are one of the few breeds more psycho than our corgi. It's the herding breeds.

Poodle = football

Good luck trying to kick a Standard Poodle.

And good luck in the 30 seconds afterward, too. They're good-sized dogs.

Chain Saw + Poodle = 2 Footballs

Is it true that they were bred to be the Priory of Sion's original guard dogs?

Wrong. They are basically sport water dogs.

And Poodles are not French. They are German. I guess they're called "French" cuz it's the French who seemed to come up w/the froo-froo looks and just make them fashion dogs.

Actually, let's think about this. Instead of being a directly descriptive adjective, the "French" may have been added after the fact describing how the French modified what was the "base" Poodle.

So eg., "Poodle" = baseline Poodle as originally intended

"French Poodle" = Poodle as modified by French fashion

Yes. I am dumbfounded that some folks keep large dogs like Great Danes in apartments.

When I was a kid we had a standard sized poodle. Very good dog and was the only dog I could teach to catch a frisbee. Not sure who taught who on that one. We didn't freak it up by shaving his butt and giving him a perm either

I've never had a whole lot of lut teaching a dog to catch a frisbee... Lab would try to bring it back, sure.. but it'd take him 15 minutes to figure out how to pick it up. :~D

Poodles? Poodles are great dogs, smart, handsome when not in the queer eye show cut. A good companion breed generally.

Now if you want to talk about poodle "parents". They are the ones who suck.

LOL...my Rott was that way. Not that I expected him to catch it but when I got it back I needed a towel to wipe it off! Now my Jack Russell likes frisbees but can't get the hang of it and my min-pin is the same size as a frisbee so that won't work at all 8>)
