Texas QB Vince Young to enter NFL draft
Houston Chronicle ^ | 1/8/06 | JOSEPH DUARTE

Texas junior quarterback Vince Young plans to enter the NFL draft and forgo his final year of college, a close family friend said today. Young plans to make the announcement this afternoon at a press conference in Austin.

"He has the blessing of God, the pastor and his family," said Yolanda Lezine, Young's godmother and the family media's spokeswoman. "It's his decision. Everybody is going to support him a 110 percent."

Young capped off his career Wednesday night, rallying the Longhorns from a 12-point deficit in the fourth quarter to defeat two-time defending national champion Southern California, 41-38, in the Rose Bowl.

The Madison product will hire Bus Cook as his agent. Cook is also the agent for Tennessee quarterback Steve McNair, Young's mentor, and Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre.

With 1 loss to TX, Ohio was consistently ranked below 4-5 1 loss teams.

Ohio State lost early but the only 1 loss team I remember them being ranked behind was Miami who also lost early. After Ohio State lost their 2nd game, I don't remember any 2 loss teams being ranked a head of them and OSU was ranked ahead of a lot of 1 loss teams.

OSU is also the highest ranked team with 1 loss in the final polls and ranked ahead of several 1 loss teams.

BTW, I believe that OSU deserves their ranking. I'm just saying that they aren't discriminated against by the voters.

Of course, Notre Dame will almost always be the highest rated team with the same number of losses and Penn State's revival this year brought them a lot of sentimental votes.

Oops, that should say "OSU is also the highest ranked team with 2 losses"

The voters have to rank OSU ahead of other 2 loss teams because the two teams they lost to have a combined record of something like 25-1 and both games were really close.

The voters almost had no choice, but if they did have a reasonable choice, they would have chose someone else.

With Vince Young leaving, Ohio State will be the overwhelming pick for #1 in the early polls. Notre Dame and Penn State will probably be in the top 5.

Good luck to him as well! It would have been nice to see him play one more year in college though. Well, except for the Red River Shootout.

Good news for OU that way. ;-)

BOOMER!

Team and league sources told ESPN's Chris Mortensen that the Texans will pass on Young, a Houston native, and select USC running back Reggie Bush with the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft, pending the formality of Bush announcing that he is turning pro.

Almost nothing will change that course, the sources told Mortensen.

The Texans will pick up an $8 million option on quarterback David Carr, who was the expansion team's first draft pick four years ago. Texans owner Bob McNair made the decision after getting extensive evaluations from various sources that strongly endorsed Carr, including a favorable report from Dan Reeves, the former longtime NFL coach hired last month as a consultant.

USC's Matt Leinart, who could have been the first pick a year ago had he turned pro after his junior season, still remains the consensus top quarterback in the NFL draft, even if Young comes out. For Leinart, he is likely to be the choice of the New Orleans Saints at No. 2 with Young projected to the Tennessee Titans at No. 3.

Steve McNair, who has been mentoring Young, including a visit to watch the Rose Bowl, will be lobbying the Titans to select Young with the third pick, Mortensen reported. Of course, McNair has to re-sign with the Titans for that to happen.

Leinart also would be desirable to Tennessee, where his former USC offensive coordinator Norm Chow is now calling plays for the Titans.

How about a friendly wager ? $100 donation to FR says you are wrong.

Frankly, preseason, I would have put OSU at #2 this year and I think next year's team will not be as good as this year.

I like defense over offense. OSU will be better on O and worse on D. The voters do like the O so you could be right.

He is a great player. He ran for scores even when SC knew what he was going to do so.

Frankly, preseason, I would have put OSU at #2 this year and I think next year's team will not be as good as this year.

ESPN agrees with you - they (Pat Forde) have OSU ranked at #2 but that was before Vince Young announced that he was leaving so Texas most likely won't stay at # - that will move OSU up to number 1.

West Virginia is getting some press but it is very unlikely they would be ranked preseason #1. Notre Dame is also getting tons of press and media love and are probably the biggest threat to OSU for preseason #1, but I don't see it happening.

It is also doubtful that with USC losing their entire backfield that they will start out as number 1.

Penn State is losing a few key players, but they will proabably get a lot of love from the voters in respect to Joe Pa. I see them being ranked higher than #13 preseason but I don't see them threatening for the preseason #1 slot.

An outside shot would be Florida where Urban Meyer is cleaning up in recruiting.

And as valuable as he is to the NFL now...one more year would make him MORE so

Um, after winning the national championship and 20+ straight games, how could his value go up? He's already a lock as a top 3 pick. Why would he give up a guaranteed $3+ million next year for a diploma in sports training, or whatever his degree is in.

I spent 5 & 1/2 years in grad school, and would have left in a heartbeat had anyone wanted to pay me $3 million a year to do something. Education is nice, but let's get real...

Also, what are your thoughts on Leinart staying in college last year?

I hope you do not mind if I put my two cents in by responding to that one.

Some have said that Leinhart "made a mistake" and that it "cost him money", but what price do we put on just plain enjoying himself?

I do wish more athletes would chose to do what they want, instead of doing what they can to grab every buck that they can.

Lets be realistic for a moment. At the salaries these guys are getting, what more can they get with the additional money that he would have (or might have) gotten?

I for one am glad to see any athlete place a value on what he wants, vs. how much money he can get.

Our local sports announcer is saying right now that Young's total package might be $80-100 million.

Young seems to be favoring home team Texans, but is also saying good things about Titans, so he may go anywhere from #1 to #3.

He said he promised his momma he *will* go on and get his degree.
